Depends on where you are from in the US. A lot of schools start the week before labor day (first weekend in September) and end just after Memorial Day (last weekend in May). There are some schools that start earlier or later than that. There are also some schools that do the year round schooling by going to school for a certain amount of weeks and then having a couple weeks off.

Yes kids go to school from approximately Sept-June her in Southern Illinois my children actually go to school from mid-august to mid-may.
I think it works great. Elementary schools start at 8:45am and go to 3:00pm, Middle school is from 8am to 2:20pm and the high school is 7:30am to 2:40pm. My high school daughter doesn't like to get up that early, but she deals with it. Hopefully this answer your question. Not quite sure about your 2nd question "How does it work?"

we live in Ohio and my wife teaches at year round school thy start 3rd week of July thy go 9 week than get 3 weeks off ,but most the school do go by the farm scheduled which goes from sept. to june

Mostly... But some states have the kids go back to school at the beginning of august or late august even.
