Horticulturists work in plant propagation, crop production, plant breeding and genetic engineering, plant biochemistry, plant physiology, and the storage, processing, and transportation of fruits, berries, nuts, vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs, and turf. They improve crop yield, quality, nutritional value, and resistance to insects, diseases, and environmental stresses. They are scientists who do much more than just grow crops - their work involves studying plant diseases, improving crops and crop production, and much more.
I hope this helps.

Horticulture comes from the Latin Hortus meaning garden plant and Cultura, think cultivate here. So there you have it, etymologically speaking, to cultivate garden plants. So, we use the term to refer to commercial gardening, growing fruit and veg or flowers and contract gardeners are also horticulturalists.
