Do you think that the tests really make the air cleaner?

it is a feel good solution by our idiotic politicians. to say that it forces older cars to run clean is a joke because they give passes to the poor. ie the ones driving the old beaters that are falling apart. the vast volume of cars on the road are under 10 years old. so it is a revenue generating machine. dont give me flak about polluted areas. i live in a county that is more rural than urban we dont have near the volume of cars on the road as larger counties. we do have several chem plants though....

well they're not a waste of time per say.. i'll tell u that much.. yes they r necessary.. i'd say the biggest reason they're necessary is not to test new cars but to make sure the older ones work right.. emissions n exhaust systems often get messed up easy n so do fuel lines due to age.. so these tests ensure that the car is working fine and if not they tell u what needs to be fixed..

First reason. In many states, unless you pass an emission test every two years, you won't be able to get your license plate renewed.

Then of course there is the added benefit of cutting down on pollution, and getting the poorly maintained and dangerous vehicles either repaired or off the road.

In Minneapolis/St Paul they have seen such an improvement in air quality that they've discontinued the emissions testing. I guess it worked here.

The point is, if your city requires it, it's because you live in a place with high pollution. If they didn't regulate the hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide coming out of all vehicles......Eventually you will not be able to breathe in the city you live in with out an oxygen mask.......Waste of time? I think not!

Yes, they are necessary, to limit the amount of pollutants produced in the US, and especially in cities.
