What's their work worth? I pay them for the jobs they do and make sure they do them steadily. Nobody in my house gets a free allowance.

In my day, the dishes, vacuuming etc were all expected. We had to go above and beyond for an allowance. We were told if you need something ask, otherwise, go get a babysitting job, or cut someones lawn.
So, when it came to my girls, the dishes ect were expected. But if they helped with yard work, cleaning out the garage, stuff like that they did get an allowance. I gave them 30.00 a week, but it went into a savings account till they wanted something within reason. As for play money, I gave them money for the movies, going to the beach etc.
By the time they were in high school, they had a tidy sum to put down on their own car.

If the parents are still buying all the clothes and personal items, I think $30 to $40 a week is fair as long as the child does chores around the house.

It really depends on the child and what they do around the house, how well behaved they are etc.
If they are well mannered and do what they are supposed to be doing, a fourteen year old doesn't have much to buy at their age that you don't already take care of. Perhaps enough to go to the movies + food for friday night would be sufficient. So, about $20 or so.

I think a teenagers needs to earn his/her allowance. As for your question I think it should be enough for them to be able to go to the movies or do something on the weekend. So now adays the would be somewhere around 20 bucks.

It depends on what they do around the house and how much things they do cost. If she likes to go to the movies, keep in mind how much that costs.
