Because the only way you can believe in God is through faith--He cannot be proven. We live in an occidental culture that requires solid proof for everything from the methods we have of teaching and learning to our justice system. To ask people to blindly believe is a tall order, and their proof has to come from a personal experience or must be accepted and passed on from parents or others they are close to. Especially when a parent is a bad example of a godly lifestyle, much in the culture works against the articles of faith that can be constructed. Thus, it is hard to believe in God.
A "belief" is something that you KNOW to be true but that you cannot PROVE to someone else. Thus, the choice made to believe in God is based on so many delicate variables that to gain an unquestioning faith is very difficult. Even those that do believe often differ in what they believe, question the Bible, their own faith, and ultimately we are all divided on what believing in God means.
Hope this helps!

It absolutely amazes me that so many people today seem to have been infected with some sort of insidious mental virus that leads them to the insane certainty that the myths, superstitions, fairy tales and fantastical delusions of a bunch of ignorant Bronze Age fishermen and wandering goat herders represent some kind of cosmic 'TRUTH' about fundamental aspects of existence and reality. They embrace a universe in which all that exists are a 6,000 year-old earth and heaven, a solid 'firmament' structure (the sky) separating the earth from heaven (terrarium earth), talking snakes (with legs) and donkeys, a shepherd staff that turns into an asp, demons chased out of people and into pigs, friendly spirits, evil spirits, walking on water, multiplying loaves and fishes, food falling from the sky, conception by a ghost, people raised from the dead, the sun stopping in its tracks, parting seas, people being bodily sucked up into heaven (which, by the way, lies on the 'other side' of the sky), world-wide flood that drowned the earth to a depth of 40 feet above the tallest mountain, creating people from a dust bunny and a rib, a magical tree of knowledge, god speaking from a burning bush... and ritual cannibalism, by eating god in the form of a cracker.
In a sane world, anybody running around spouting ANY of that crap, would be locked up in the State Farm for the Funny. Apparently, though, mass insanity seems to convey some sort of free pass for the loony.
And you actually wonder why people don't believe? LOL.
Get a grip.

I don't believe because it's just too far-fetched to believe in some mysterious being who created everything.
I think people originally used "god" or "gods" to explain things they couldn't otherwise explain in the natural world like the beauty and intricacy of life on earth or the stars and planets or how a baby comes to be. Science can now explain these things and religion is reduced to imposing a moral code of behavior on people. The code is so at odds with other religions that religious conflicts and wars rage on for ever and ever. How moral is it to kill and maim people just because they're different from you?

The majority of intelligent people don't believe in God. God is just another fake creation by man.
Humanity has created many Gods, for example – Gods of Olympus, Ancient Egypt, Babylon and so on. Most of us are atheists about most Gods humanity has created, except the latest craze, the current God in the Bible. Learned atheists have also rejected this version of a God, but some hard-core believers still hang on, presumably until a better image of God is created by man.
Faith in God seems to be nothing more than humans attempting to run away from reality, an excuse to avoid thinking and evaluating evidence. Faith is just an emotional escape and really just a substitute for opening your eyes to reason.
Believers talk about God creating man in his own image. It’s in the Bible so it’s fact – get a grip, get real. The facts suggest the exact opposite. Man created God in his own image. I’m sure humanity will disregard this God, as they have disregarded all previous Gods, it’s just a matter of time before humanity creates another God that better serves their emotions and image.
God and the Bible are both fakes. There is not one single matter discussed in the Bible out of the many thousands of issues raised that has been proven true, yet many matters have been proven false.
You don’t really need to be a rocket scientist to deduce with practically 100% certainty that God and the Bible are fake.

Many people define God as someone who knows all, is also all powerful and all good. By that definitions people struggle with the belief that if there is a God why does evil exist. By their definition he has the power necessary to stop evil and obviously has the knowledge of it. Also by definition he is all good so they see him as having a responsibility to cause good, or at least prevent evil. They then then conclude there is no God because evil exists.

Why do we stop believing in Santa Claus? The Tooth Fairy? The Easter Bunny?
Someday most people become mature enough to get along without their childhood fables.

Believe nothing.
No matter where you read it,
Or who said it,
Even if I have said it,
Unless it agrees with your own reason
And your own common sense.
This is a quote by Buddha in the Dhammapada. This is why I am a Buddhist. Buddha tells us to not believe anything, even his own words, unless they make sense to us. So far, everything I have read from him has made sense. Nothing in the bible does this, it requires blind faith. I refuse to believe in something who's existence my own common sense fails to confirm. However, I will also not blindly disbelieve in God, because there is also no way to prove he does not.
