Our friends from church have invited us over to their house along with another couple we do not know and told us not to bring anything unless we felt the need to. We would usually bring someone a bottle of wine for the dinner, but they do not drink. Is there anything else that we should bring?

Sparkling cider is a nice touch, as is a small basket of coffees/teas. Of you're really in doubt, a simple vase of flowers or something for the table (like a nice candle/candleholder) is always nice.

I would hesitate to bring food over, unless you've checked with your host/hostess first, in case they've got a menu planned out already.

You can always offer to make a dessert...

I never show up empty-handed when invited somewhere, something taught to me by my very proper grandmother. I would suggest a flowering plant or something special for the kitchen, like a recipe book or a set of towels. I try not to bring food because I don't want the person to feel like they have to put out what I've brought (that's probably just me, though, and nothing is wrong with this practice). I like to bring a bottle of wine, but since they don't drink, maybe a little gift basket with boxes of crackers and some cheese with a pretty towel? These things can be inexpensive, but are incredibly thoughtful and well received!

Perhaps a box of candy that could be shared.Almost every one likes a nice box of good chocolates.

I would not offer to bring food,if I have planned a dinner party all the foods are put together to compliment one another and I have planed my deserts far in advance.
flowers are fine but some people suffer from allergy's.

I like the idea of bringing gourmet flavored coffees for dessert time! I don't drink at all myself, and would love it if someone brought this as an alternative!

- Really good chocolates like La Madison du Chocolat or Godiva, in a pinch
- Flowers (cut or in a pot)
- A jar of excellent jam (no preservatives!)
- A box of Crane's thank-you notes with a pretty ribbon (who doesn't need thank you notes?!)

Great, simple ideas for hostess gifts are always things that you know everybody can use but are a little bit more special than they'd buy for themselves -- and never, ever gift cards!!!

I would say flowers, a bag of home-made cookies or a box of really good chocolates. Some really nice coffee beans or a tin of lovely tea would also be a nice thought.

Why don't you bring some nice home made cookies? I would hold off on anything with nuts though, just in case anyone is allergic.
