Kneeling is a sign of reverence and submission.
It is not absolutely necessary to kneel in order to pray to God.
Why are you concerned that this may be another "catholic thing"? Are you automatically bothered by things that are catholic?

Kneeling is an ancient form of submission and predates Jesus. As another person said the bible mentions praying in different positions.

I think it's another way of making prayer formal. I like to pray when laying in bed trying to fall asleep, becuase the worries of the day are over, and I can relax and concentrate on God. However, it is a way to show humility. It's not necessary. It may be another catholic thing, who knows.

The idea is submission, bowing down before one in authority.
There is no "one approved position" for prayer. The Bible describes people praying while standing, bowing, or lying flat on the ground. The position of the heart is more important than the position of the body.

You should always kneel before praying. It's a sign of reverence. That's probably how it became popular. Like people used to bow before a king...

I think it just became tradition since we know God is above us we throw our selves down inm praise to him. Or kneel down in some cases lowering ourselves in recognition of his almighty Power and universal Sovreignty!
