My son has had since birth severe breathing issues (he has laryngotracheomalacia) and asthma, and severe gerd(hes on an adult dose of prevacid daily). He has had 13 hospital stays and more than enough er and dr visits.
I fired the first GI doc after my son developed pnemonia secondary to reflux and continue to require .31mg xopenex every 2 hours at home around the clock (i am a respiratory therapist), anyways the new GI doc said he has a milk protein allergy on top of all of the above problems. He placed him on Ellecare formula. His respiratory issues immediatly disapeard. Then soon to follow his GI symtoms disapeared. He has now (2 days from now will be 1) been able to eat every type of babyfood out there, and no reactions. The GI doc said it was time to see an allergist for testing, and a milk trial. He had neg skin and blood test, but had respiratory and gi symptoms (including gi bleeding) from the milk.

Why is he able to have cheese, and milk containing foods and has no reactio

no reactions to anything but ice cream and plain cows milk.
Is there a chance he will grow out of this?
He is severely underweight (under the 5th percentile)
What are the chances of other severe allergies later in life?

don't cut and paste, I want educated answers, if I wanted articles, I would look it up myself, a monkey could search on the internet.

I do not put much faith in the old skin and blood test route as they told me I had no food allergies but my symptoms kept getting worse. I have now found a naturopath who specializes in allergies and I have had to eliminate dairy. I too mostly had problems just with milk and ice cream. I think it is because the amount of cheese I might eat is way less than a big glass of milk, a latte or a bowl of ice cream. I did try the Lactaid milk which I find better than the Soy milk. I would say that he will probably have to avoid dairy most of the time although there is a chance that as he gets older he will improve. I too mainly have respiratory problems from my allergies and I can get congested and have laboured breathing just from a few spoonfuls of ice cream. Good luck.

My son had the same allergy. He never had an issue with cheese either, but also has not grown out of it (now 9 yrs old) If he drinks milk he has breathing problems. He can drink soy milk without any problem though and it has almost as many calories and I personally believe it to be better for him anyway. When he was a baby he would only drink the vanilla or chocolate, but since he needed to gain weight anyway I didn't find the extra sugar to be a problem.

You are really blessed that you have discovered this for your baby. Many people don't recognise milk allergies and their children end up malnurished and with ear tubes by the time they're 2. I'm so happy for you and your son that you can go on now to give him foods that won't hurt him and he can go on to be a smart healthy child. He will do very well from here on out if you simply keep him from milk or ice cream, frozen yogurt and soy milk are all he'll know so he won't feel like he's missing out on anything. ~~hugs~~ Best wishes
