I'm Japanese, and English isn't my native tongue. I don't know what "laughing my a** off" means because some people in Yahoo! Answers answer questions with only "lmao" as if they mean to say "whatever." What exactly does that mean?

1) to indicate great amusement at something read

2) to not take something seriously

3) to feign nonchalance when taunting someone

It can mean any one thing you listed, but it is really more applicable to number one.

It just means to laugh as hard as you are physically able to. The expression is used in a context of a story that is very funny so it's kind of a joke in itself to visualize someone laughing so hard over something that's so funny that his "a" falls off. It makes the funny story a little more funny and it directs some of the humor toward the person telling the story.

I don't mean to pry but how did you find out that 'lmao' stands for laugh my a## off? I'm curious because I had to think a while and English is my native, and only fluent, language. Please add comment to your question if you are willing. By the way, I agree with the previous answers-1) is the best interpretation.

If someone tells a funny joke, it would be #1. If someone asks a stupid question or says something stupid, it would be #2 (and also #1 if it was funny). Basically, laughing your a** off just means laughing really hard, so you could say "lmao" whenever something makes you laugh really hard.

It means laughing so hard that you shake..... and hopefully lose some weight off your azz at the same time....

People used to use a machine that shook a belt that went around their azz. This was supposed to take weight off and tone a flabby azz. I don't think they accomplished weight reduction... but, they might have felt good.

This may be where the phrase 'lmao' originated.

1 and 2, depending on the circumstances. "Laughing my *** off" basically mean they are laughing a lot, which means they find something really funny and usually that means that they don't take it seriously.
