I think getagrip didn´t really understand your question... You didn´t ask about kofferdam, right?
Yes those masks are still in use. I had to wear one when I was 14. It´s called Headgear and pulls back your molars. And then there is another one: the Delair-Mask, it moves your upper jaw to the front.
There are a few other masks, but these are the ones most popular.

The purpose of the face masks is to protect those treating you from getting sprayed in the mouth and nose. Since during your routine ortho visits there is no drilling, there is no need for the doctor or the assistant to protect themselves from your overspray. (And you thought we wore all that stuff to protect you).

idk what that is and ive been through a lot involving orthedonture. so i dont think it is.
