Guys,

I would like to free/give away my four pet cockatiels.
As I haven’t found any place or friends who wants the birds, I am planning to let the birds go free. I would like to know if these birds can survive out in the city?
My birds can fly perfectly. What will they eat out? The weather out here is hot, so tht wont be a problem.
I would like to have some input.

I would not let them outside, they are domesticated and would not know how to survive.

Put an ad in the local newspaper, or go to the pet shop and ask if he would like to buy them.

If I might ask where do you live? I might take one of them off your hands.

Cockatiels, parakeets, and other birds found to purchase in pet stores are born and raised to be pets. To set them free you are guaranteed to have them die. Their survival instincts are poor, since being caged they rely on you to feed them. Setting them free is not a good idea. They surely can fly, however they wont know what kind of food to eat or where to get it. And when the weather does turn chilly they wont be able to build a nest to keep them warm or safe. They do not know who their enemies are either, so they will be vulnerable. If you do not want these birds anymore, call the pet store where you got them, or find a store specializing in exotic birds and see if they will take them. Most pet stores will take them back. You could even try running a short ad in the newspaper. Any of this is better than turning them free.

Why are you wanting to get rid of them anyway?

What you are considering is outrageous and disgusting. Those poor animals have no chance what so ever at making it out there. You should have never taken those birds if you are this irresponsible!!!! Bring them to a pet store goofball. Have you no sense??? How many cocktails do you see flying around the city???? Run an ad even, Post a sign, geez!!!

Give them away, do not free them! Becasie they have been captive, although the weather may be warm, the elements, rain, wind, heat they would not survive. Also depending where you are, they may not be able to sustain themself on the seeds.fruits they need. Not to mention birds of prey. NOT a good idea at all, please find them a good home. Even some humane societies will accept birds.

DO NOT LET THEM OUT!!! although they can fly, and where you live is warm, you have always fed them. They have never had to find their own food, and they would not survive out in the wild. You need to contact a rescue and tell them that you no longer want these birds, and want to give them up.

They can't survive alone. This is not their natural habitat, and even in the nature, now they have learned to be dependent on humans. Don't let them go. Put an ad, give them to a pet shop, I am sure you'll find a solution if you try. You are responsible for them, if you let them go you are just giving them a slow, suffering death full of anxiety.

My cockatiel did the same when i first bought it. WHat my dad does with each one we buy is wraps em up in an old towel. (Make sure wings are not caught and are folded) just hold it on its back and rub its head. Keep doing this and it will get used to you. I bonded with mine and it was very wild.

Do not "free" your birds. Surrender them to your local humane society. Cockatiels who have been pets are not equipped to live in the wild and "freeing" them will ultimately kill them.
