You know when the priest asks "If anybody sees any reason why these two shouldn't unite...speak now or forever hold your peace"? Well has anybody actually heard of somebody objecting? What's your story or experience?

Yup it happened at a wedding I was at - its dead funny. the priest asked it and one of the grooms mates who had been on the beer ALL night before and all morning stood up and shouts "ME I OBJECT - WHO AM I GONA GO BEERING WITH WHEN HES UNDER HER THUMB!!!!" Obviously he was quietly but roughly escorted from the church but to this day people still talk about it - it was actually one of the highlights of an otherwise pretty boring wedding. Wouldnt like it to happen at mine though!

No, I have never heard of that happening - but they should really ditch that part of the ceremony. It's too old and ridiculous. Why would anyone go to someone's wedding and object to it? If you weren't in support of it, just don't attend!

My husband and I got married a year ago in a Greek Orthodox church, and they don't even ask that question during the ceremony. They know you're both there because you want to be, and all your guests are in support of the marriage too. I loved that!

An acquaintance of mine once told me that happened at a wedding he attended. Seems the bride was oh so slightly knocked up with someone other than the groom, but planned on marrying the groom anyway instead of breaking it off! The guy burst into the church and stopped the wedding, the marriage never took place, and the guy who knocked up the girl ended up with her. I am not sure if it is a true story or not, but the acquaintance told me it was.

I haven't seen it, but our minister told us that it happened at the very first wedding he ever performed. According to the rules of the ministry, the wedding cannot proceed after that point. The minister had to perform a private ceremony in their home the next day.

no, I haven't been at a wedding that it has happened. But have been nervous when it got to that part thinking someone was going to object. I'd like to know what really happens if someone does object. lol

No I havent been to one that this has happened.
I am getting married in January and I am really freaked out about this happening since my soon to be in laws are MORONS!!!!
We are thinking of asking for that part NOT to be said but I have to talk to the minister to find out if it is said at all and if it can be taken out!

No, but I have been to a wedding where I wanted to say something. This woman I know got married to a guy I suspect to be gay. He tried to hit on my boyfriend a few months before the wedding! I should have said something BEFORE the wedding.

I haven't been to a wedding where they ask that. I think it's an old-fashioned thing that ministers/priests don't use anymore.

It happens. And usually it isn't pretty.
Many brides opt now not to have that question asked, as there isn't any legality to the statement. It is just part of the traditional ceremony.

I've never actually heard the officiator really ask that question. I'm married and have been to many weddings.
