It seems to me that by having a roll cage instead of a crumple zone, energy will not be dissipated as much and more force will be transfered to the driver. It would also transfer more momentum to another car that it hits.

No worse than the behemoth SUVs that transfer all their energy to other cars in an impact.

The roll cage is actually much safer for the driver in a light car, which is why they use them in racing cars and go carts.

If I am in an accident, caused by some drunk, I don't carry how much momentum gets transferred to the drunk's car.. HE or SHE gets what they deserve..
And, I don't drink, soooo, I can be all self-righteous in this regard..

Mercedes is pretty proud of their safety features in the SMART car. And safety crazy Europeans are buying them up like mad. If you're properly belted in, you should be in pretty decent shape in one.
