God does not punish atheists and agnostics. But if you are to believe the bible, it clearly states that God is love . All have the chance to come to repentance. In answer to your question .
The crime is not accepting Jesus Christ as your personal saviour
Sense God sent his only son, to die for your sins , it grieves and hurts god , when you reject Jesus Christ . He came that you may have life. A life without sin , a life of peace, joy and happiness.
A life full of his love for you , and the gift of being able to love others , through his eyes. And bring them to the saving knowledge or Jesus Christ.

We didn't believe in him because he refused to give us any of the proof he allegedly promised us. So, apparently, this all powerful and all loving god considers a sincere quest for the truth a crime. Sound like the kinda guy you wanna worship or even believe exists?

Every ounce of strength in my body and mind is convinced that there is no god. So if god created me to know me, he sure managed to prove that he's not perfect, and if he's not perfect, he's not god. This is a contradiction. Therefore, god did not create me. Simple. And therefore, he won't be judging me because if he did not create me, then I am not a part of his creation, and since I do definitively exist, the universe is not his creation, and therefore, I am not beholden to him for salvation or my existence.

In short, he don't exist, and apparently that torques him off.

God does not issue the punishment. You have the choice to believe in him and receive everlasting life or you have the choice to deny him and burn in everlasting hell. You have the choice. He will not force his presence on you so why would you want to be in heaven anyway if you don't want to be in his presence? There are consequences in this life no matter how unfair you perceive them to be. Heaven and hell are just the result of the choices you make in life.

What do you consider punishment? If you refer to heaven or hell, then the punsihment is hell wouldnt really be punishment for you if you dont want to serve God. You will spend your eternity with whomever you serve. God or Satan. For, if you do not serve God then by default, you serve Satan. The choice is yours.

God wont punish unbeleivers during their life, he gives everyone until thier last breath to accept him. if at that time you still reject him, then he has no choice but to reject you.

Prepare your knee, because one day it will bow to the name of Jesus.
