Oh dear ... memories. I went to school from 1961 to 1973. The only good dinner was every Wednesday. It was roast (either pork, beef or lamb) with roast pots and yorkshire and lumpy gravy. In junior school Mondays was the worst with stew (ugh) or meat pudding (even more ugh) with boiled pots. Friday was greasy fish and chips. I can't remember Tuesdays and Thursday. Puddings were squashed fly pudding (current slice), jam roli poli with custurd, rice pudding with treacle or a dollop of jam, and soemtime when we were really lucky ice cream. WE had to eat ALL of our dinner or we where not allowed to leave the table. Then we had to scrape our dishes into a large bowl and put our plates and cutlery on the dinner tray. At secondary school, we had a more modern menu which included curry (if you could call it that) and salads (a couple of pieces of lettuce, half a tom, couple of slices of cumcumber, hald an egg or a slice of ham. We also had spaghetti bolognaise. At least at secondary school we were not made to finsih all of our meal.
Even though, we did not like school dinners, it did ensure that we had at least one full stable meal a day (and many kids where in dire need of this).
At primary school we also were given a bottle of milk with a straw at first playtime. We had to drink all of this. It was usually warm and I used to hate it. I would have to think of something else drinking it and would gobble it down in order not to vomit. But once again, in those days many children did not have any other dairy products other than this.
Most children are much more lucky these days.

no i do not like semolina, lol. im in university right now, and staying in residence...and to give u an idea of what the food is like...last night we waited for half an hour in a queue for fried potatoes and an oily piece of fish. when i say oily, it isn't the natural oil of the fish but the oil that it was deep fried in. HORROR! it took 4 serviettes to mop up the oil. tonight is pizza night, which is another nasty meal! we get a huge portion of chips, and a pizza the size of a plate, which has a topping resembling regurgitated chicken, and the chips are yet again drowning in oil..it is so ridiculous that they give such a huge portion on one day and too small a portion on another day. there was a time where we were served french fries(chips) on average 5 times a week..speak about unhealthy!so needless to say, im really looking forward to moving to an apartment next yr, if only to leave this food=)

I finished school last year but stayed on and will be doing my last year of 6th from there this year, the dinners were ok, it was the que's to get them that was the unbearable bit...
Also since Jamie Oliver's school dinners the school has taken a more healthier approach to the meals and you can not buy chips in the canteen on tuesdays and fridays lol doesn't stop people going down to the local chippy to get them but still, it was ok!!

We never had semolina. But I remember them being pretty yummy for the most part (very fattening and very southern). The most digusting thing were the pizzas. Yuck! Little barely-warmed squares with lots of awful tasting sauce and very little cheese. Uck! It put me off of frozen pizza for years.
My favorite thing the lunchladies made were these peanut butter patties. Oh they were so good!! I wish I had the recipe for them.

I have got good-tasting food in school ever since I went there for the first time (at the age of 7).. But I really learned to appreciate the free meal some around at the age of 13...

I once came down with food poisoning because the ravioli had been kept in a warm tray for too long and the school completely denied that this was the cause even though loads of people who had school dinners got it and no one who took sandwiches.
Another thing was in the year 1998 my dinnerladies insisted on me eating with my knife in my right hand and when my mum complained they said it was so i wouldn't make a fool of myself eating out!

At my very first primary school they were good. The head dinner lady used to make her own deserts and cakes and bring them in to give to the kids. Before the government put in regulations to stop people doing that...
After that it was basically mashed potato and spaghetti hoops. Although it was awful, I still have a little nostalgic rosey glow when I think of spaghetti hoops.

I was permanently put off rice pudding after the dinner lady's false teeth fell out, straight into the big vat. She fished them out & carried on serving.
Other than that, not bad, though the chips were sometimes a bit soggy.

What I remember being the wost was the puddings. They were gross. Really horrible sponge with disgusting fruit in them and this lumpy custard with skin on top.
I remember crying so much because the teacher said I wasn't allowed to leave until I'd finished it, and when she wasn't looking my older brother ate it for me!
