Are there any dogs out there with hypo-allergenic coats or can you take medication to combat the effects the dog has on him ie: runny, puffy eyes, itchy skin etc?

Hi, I have 3 absolutely wonderful little dogs called Chinese Crested's. They come in 2 forms, hairless and fully coated (Powderpuff) with hair and not fur. They are lovable and entertaining, with a long life span. I have also heard that in addition to the above breed that Poodles are hypo-allergenic.

The non drowsy over the counter Benedryl may help with the runny nose etc., if you choose to get another type of dog.

It rather depends on the allergy. Some people are allergic to the saliva, other the fur. Poodles don't malt in the same way as other dogs so people with allergies can often find then a good option. Try visiting some at a rescue centre or breeder and see what happens.

Good luck with your dog quest!

Theres no guarantee that this will work, but you could try visiting someone whe breeds poodles to see if they kick off his allergy. Guide Dogs for the Blind breed a labrador x poodle for blind people who are allergic to dog fur, they have to be clippe dregularly to keep the coat in good condition.
You can also brush the dog daily, hoover the house every day and bath the dog once a month.
But son't just go out and get one because its not guarenteed to work.

There are many breeds that have hair as opposed to fur. It's actually the dander he is allergic to not the dog itself. If you were to get say a Shih-Tzu and bathed it once a week that would help. Also there are poodles, Bischons, and many other breeds. Go to www.akc.org and type in allergies in the search engine. Whatever breed you decide on go to the persons house and stay for at least 30 minutes. Then see how he reacts. Best test of all.

There are medications - the dogs with so-called hypoallergenic coats are a ripoff because it isn't the dog's coat that causes the allergic reaction. Your BF should speak to his physician before the two of you get a dog...the medications are expensive and can have undesireable side effects. Are you sure it isn't YOU who mostly wants a dog? Is your boyfriends health so immaterial to you that you'd demand he put up with such discomfort as you already know he experiences around dogs? I'm blessed in that my girlfriend is not that shallow and callous.

Labradoodles are a good choice - my friend has one - really nice temperament. Although some have allergy free coats and some don't - you have to wait until the individual dog is born to tell apparently. Best to speak to a breeder.

My sister is also allergic to animals but once she has been around them for a while she is ok. When we used to go on holiday and come back to our pets, her allergies were bad again but her body soon adapted.

Miniature Schnauzers! They are cute and very hyper. They are also hypo-allergenic. We have 5 dogs. They live outside except my Mini Schnauzer and my Teacup Poodle. (Teacup Poodles are not hypo-allergenic I don't think)

Lhasa Apso's have hair so do not usually affect people with allergies. We have one and they are really good temperament too. If you fancy a bigger dog, Old English Sheepdogs have hair too, so should also be OK. I know someone whose daughter suffered really badly with asthma but desperately wanted a dog. They bought a Lhasa Apso and never had any symptoms from it. Hope this helps.

i wouldn't recomend taking anti-allergy medication long term and sure if you speak to your doctor they would agree. however there are breeds of dog that have hair that is ment to be less irritating than others. I suggest visiting breeders and interacting with the dogs to see what happens before deciding as i am quite sure neither you or your boyfriend are irresponsible or as self obsessed as old mick! good luck, dogs are a great pleasure to keep!!

Wire haired breeds such as terriers are often better for alergy sufferers. See if you can find a breeder or friend with one who will allow B/F to spend time among dogs to see if he's ok with them

good luck
