Or should they leave it for the federal agents?

No. If the issue is about not enough people at the borders, then the gov't should implement it. Police Officers are not Immigration Officers. I depend on my police to protect me and keep drug dealers, murderers, pimps, perverts, thiefs and the like off of the streets--not to be tracking down illegals. Besides, Border Police are trained just for that:protecting the border. Let them do what is their job description. I've enclosed a job description for all officers, ranging from Police Officer to Customs agent.

That's an interesting question, filled with nuances and ramifications.

If you grant the police the authority to question an individual about their citizenship, then you have to make sure that they ask EVERYONE. This could snowball into another instance of stereotyping. While it would assist the federal authorities, it's a PR nightmare.

If you don't grant the authority, then most illegal immigrants can/will run around and never be caught.

Personally, I think that the authority should be granted. Of course, I also feel that if you aren't doing anything illegal, why are you worrying about the police asking you questions.

YES!

Should and better! That is their job! Citizens get questioned relentlessly, and being an immigrant < legal or not>doesn't entitle a person to special treatment.
So local officers question the person THEN turn the person over to Federal agent to allow the "Feds" to do their job!

I think that unless the information is related to the crime, the police officers should leave that work ot the federal agents.

A police officer has the right to ask you anything he wants - that's his job.

You have the right to refuse to answer the question and the officer will act, on your answer or refusal to answer, as he sees fit.

If you have a problem with that, apply for a green card.

Police should be able to question legal immigration status.
And detain illegals until they can be sent to a facility for deportation.

It's their job.

Not only yes, but hell yes.

Police officers are to uphold he law, protect the public trust, and to serve their community and country.

If they are able to determine that someone is a criminal by being here illegally, by all means let them follow through with it.

Shouldn't anyone? It's a matter of security right? If I'm working in a secured area I'm suppose to challenge anyone without an ID.

Don't we want a secure nation?

They should be allowed to question suspects. If they are in this country illegally, they are breaking a law.

Police are there to uphold the law. If someone is here illegally, then they are breaking the law.
