For everything, there is a beginning except GOD, who has no beginning and no end.

So there has to be a starting point for any life. So before birth, we all were nothing worth mentioning. Some say, we were just plain cells in our parents body.

Death is not the end. Its a beginning, of a new life, where you will get the recompense of all you did in this world. This is called as Afterlife. The belief in afterlife is necessary for proper functioning of this world. If man does not believe in this reality, he will become a devil, as he will believe there is no accountability to his sins. He will commit each and every sin and think "who will ask?"

But if there should be social order and peace, self-accountability of your each and every deed is a MUST.

Islam teaches excatly that. KNow more about life and the Purpose of Life

Before birth there’s nothing. Physical life begins with conception.
Real (eternal) life begins when (if) we chose to accept the free gift of Jesus Christ who is the Lord, savior, redeemer, healer, comforter of anyone who is thirsty, hungry, burdened, tired, disappointed, rejected and “poor in spirit” i.e. of anyone who feels he has come to the end of his “self”. Real life starts from this physical life and extends after death to eternity. The only prerequisite is to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that God raised him from the dead.

Depends on your belief. Tibetan Buddhism states that we have 49 days between incarnations...in Western religions, honestly, I don't know what the official stance is.

I'll give the Buddhists this: They have a concrete answer.
