Dear Teddy,
It depends on what are you going to do with it. If you want to record your family or office events the best camcorder for you must have at least 1.2 Mega Pixel moving picture recording and also support at least 512 MB memory card. But if you want to have a good quality and want to earn money you must notice to these features:
>A power full and high quality engine
3 Mega Pixel moving quality with 3CCD technology and Crystal Engine
>Support memory cards up to 1GB (SD card is recommended)
>4 Mega Pixel still image quality
>A big lens whit multiple coats to reduce unwanted extra lights
(45mm lend with 16 coats is the best choice)
>Its lend must has manual control to have the best zoom and
focus
>Support extra tools such as DC Light, Flash, Microphone and ...
>A Large LCD to display (TFT LCD is the best choice to have the best view and easy cleaning)
>Depends on you, support DVD or MiniDV tape for recording
DVD recording must compress to MPEG2 but DV recording compress to DV mode. So DV recording has a little more quality.
>Support video and audio IN/OUT
>Support FireWire (iLink) to send your movie to a PC or MAC

If you notice to these, you'll get the best camcorder.
If you want all these features I recommend these models:
Panasonic GS400 or GS500 (MiniDV recording)
Panasonic DS300 (DVD recording)

i assume when you say handy cam you are refering to a handy movie camera example Mini DV format. see the list i made.
A. 3 CCD - 3 CCD would always have better picture quality than 1 CCD cameras.
B. Lens - See if the lens is made by a refutable company like in many Panasonic model they are manufactured by Leica Dicomar ; Sony by Carl Zeiss...
C. Image stabilizer - this feature comes invery handy especially when your shooting in zoom a little jerk would be like your shooting on a boat. In most models only "electronic DSP" Image stabilizer is there in Panasonic it have the "OIS" Optical Image Stabilizer" which I rate would be better than just the electronic ones.
D. Weight - Nobody thinks this is an issue but it is especially if your shooting for an hour & with out a tripod.

Best of all feel the cameras you want to buy & see if it fits your capacity to operate & makes you look like farncis ford copolla rather than just like another boring holiday video enthusiats.
