my mother-in-law had gotten a puppy the same time and from the same place where we got my kitten. the puppy went in yesterday for routine shots and a stool testing and found that he had hookworm. now when my kitten went in for the same they found he had coccia and was treated. Im worried my kitten has worms just because he eats all day long like its nothing...is it possible for a kitten to catch a worm from a dog?

The way the veterinarian determines an animal has hookworm is the same in dogs and cats. If the vet tested your kitty and founc coccia, he or she'd also have seen hookworm IF the kitty had been infested with the parasite at the time. Yes, animals who share the same territory can pick up parasites left by the other critter. You should be taking your kitty for an annual checkup anyway and taking along a stool sample to be tested for such nasties. You collect that sample by watching the animal, when it poops, take a plastic sandwich bag, turn it inside out, stick your hand in and use it like a glove to pick up some of the bowel movement and then reverse the bag to keep the stuff off your hands and zip it closed. Do this as near the time of your kitty's appointment as possible. And wash your hands afterwards anyway.

yes, and we can get worms from animals too. Be very careful. Worms are very very contagious. You could always ask the vet to see your kitten again.

yes it is possible because cats and dogs sniff each other and if the cat decided to clean the dog (which they are famous for cleaning others) the worms were transmitted this way...it has nothing to do with eating all day long....

well i would call the vet and ask them if you can give the kitten a dewormer pill "just in case". The receptionists at the vet are very helpful
