It's not the genes. They were not born with those. If you look of a new born baby, he is slim, but it depends on how often his mother feeds him. If she does it too often, the baby's stomach might enlarge and he keeps eating a lot during his childhood, teenage and so on. And if he becomes an adult, he might have health problems and those genes get affected such way that even though they start eating less, they don't lose any weight.

It is not a fat person's fault that he is fat, but that does not mean that he cannot change. Fat people are born fat because they enjoy eating, and ate a lot during the early stages of their life. When a child is growing from a fetus to an adolescent, that is the time when your DNA says "Ok, this is how this guy is going to be when he grows up, so let's make him this way" so if you ate a lot when you were little, guess what? You are going to be a fat guy. If you ran outside and were rambunctious? Guess what, you are going to be skinny and eccentric. Fat people just enjoy eating a little too much, and do not like exercise. This is what you do.
You must work out at least two hours a day. Now you may say that you have a full time job that is physically demanding but you plateau and never go beyond that. This is because you need to add the amoutn of time you spend working every day. So you may have to start working out for an hour a day, then make it two hours, and then five hours. In a few weeks, you should see results.

You're right. A lot of people are born with genetic problems that cause them to gain excessive weight, like thyroid problems and such. A person doesn't necessarily have to eat McDonald's every day and sit around doing nothing to get fat. Sometimes it is just a genetic problem. A person can have a healthy diet and be physically active but still gain the weight. I don't know the statistics of this tho, but I know that the media tends to lead us to believe that the major cause of obesity in America is an unhealthy diet and inactive lifestyle. This view could be correct but I'm not sure.

95% of the time it is their fault. There is probably a gene or other medical issues that gives some people a higher probability of being larger - but, ultimately, the choice is with the individual. If you eat a correct diet and exercise regularly, even with susceptible genes or other issues, you will be in decent shape. Anything else is just an excuse to not take responsibility for yourself.

I find it really funny (and slightly disturbing) how stereotypical 99% of these answers are.

Fat people are not fat because of any one particular reason. You cannot point to any one particular factor and have it somehow become the end-all answer that explains universally why people are overweight. In one person, it might be a geneticly low metabolism. In another, it could be emotional eating. In another, it could be just that a person loves food. Or it could be a MULTITUDE of different reasons. Because of this, it's hard to ascribe 100% fault for a problem many people suffer with to any one particular person or factor. Stop oversimplifying things... it's not that easy to understand!

Fact is, whatever the cause, it IS the overweight person's responsibility to watch out for their health... and that means dealing with this.

Most definitely yes.
There is no such thing as a fat gene. Fat people do have the "I am full" sense, if they tell you they don't they either are lying or are refusing to recognize it.
The causes of getting fat are the same...not eating properly (even if it is healthy food) and not exercising. What triggers the eating too much varies from person to person. For one person it could be they are addicted to eating just like someone could be addicted to smoking. For another person it could be from constant, inescapable abuse as a child or adult. In any case a fat person will live a shorter life compared to someone of normal weight.
Fat people in general are very critical of themselves. More often than not they continually tell themselves they are ugly, stupid, and worthless. There are some who feel so miserable about their appearance and how they feel in general that they are literally on the edge of suicide. So please think before you walk around behind a fat person making oink oink pig noises, moo cow sounds or telling them that they are ugly, stupid, and worthless.
I'm fat myself, been battling my weight problem unsuccessfully since childhood. ..and I lost my mom last year from complications caused by obesity.

A lot of people these days have developed what's call "insulin resistance" due to the high carb american diet. This means that insulin, which is responsible for storing fat as well as burning off sugar, will not function properly. You don't have to be diabetic to be insulin resistant, but it's a precursor to diabetes.

What happens is that the sugar that food turns into in the body is no longer burned as it should be, but stored as fat. And no matter how hard you try to loose it, the weight never seems to want to come off.

I agree, however some of us and that includes me were also brought up to "clean your plate, so you can have dessert", well that is a habit that is hard to break. Then as you age, your body changes and it begins to retain, then hold weight. If I could lose 25 lbs I would be estactic! Please don't pick on us, we still have feelings under all that, and we're for the most part, not liking ourselves much. No can beat us up more than our own thoughts about how we look. And when you get older and your a woman, well let's just say it's impossible to lose weight. So if you're young?, watch what and how much you eat. Exercise 3 X a week, stay slim and trim for life. hugs

Some people do have a genetic predisposition to gaining weight, but just like they can inherit a tendency towards heart disease, diabetes, even some cancers, having the genes for it doesn't make it inevitable. What it does mean is that you have to work harder NOT to see the problem manifest itself in you...but it is possible...if you are careful to practice healthy lifestyles.
