The Manx is a breed of cat with a naturally occurring mutation of the spine. This mutation shortens the tail, resulting in a range of tail lengths from normal to tailless.
The hind legs are longer than the front legs, creating a continuous arch from shoulders to rump giving the cat a rounded appearance. Manx cats move with more like a hop than a stride when running; in this aspect, they resemble rabbits more than cats.
Many Manx have a small 'stub' of a tail, but Manx cats are best known as being entirely tailless; it is the distinguishing characteristic of the breed

It started out as a defect of the spine, a naturally occurring mutation. The tail is part of the spine and Manx cats have a short spine missing the tail vertebra. Some people think they look cute and breed them.
Just because you have a cat without a tail or a v. short tail does not mean you have a Manx. You could have a Japanese Bobtail, or an American Bobtail check out at http://www.cfa.org
Or you could have a stray with a run of bad luck.

They were probably bred out. The Isle of Mann in the Irish Sea where they come from, probably had very limited chance for cross breeding, being an island. over the years there was probably a lot of inter-breeding of the cats (some intentional and some not) which gave rise to this particular breed.

I have a cat that has no tail. She is not a pure-bred cat. It is a genetic mutation. She looks like a bunny!
