Tesco to expand Bangalore operations
The Bangalore centre, engaged in IT and BPO operations will become the first captive facility for UK’s largest retailer.
BANGALORE, DHNS:
UK’s largest retailer Tesco plans to consolidate IT, support and BPO operations at its centre in Bangalore, which was set up earlier this year. It plans to ramp up the headcount to about 800 from existing 150 personnel by the end of 2005 with it own campus.
The facility in Bangalore, which will be known as Tesco Hindustan Service Centre, will focus on developing new software solutions, maintaining existing applications, integrating numerous technology solutions that Tesco uses globally and customer support functions. This will also result in 400 IT jobs being shifted to Bangalore from the UK.
“It will take at least 18 months to consolidate IT and other operations in Bangalore centre. We are gradually working towards it,” Tesco Hindustan Service Centre CEO Meena Ganesh told Deccan Herald.
She said the centre, first captive facility of Tesco outside the UK, would focus equally on IT application development and management and BPO services.
Ms Ganesh said the company was also building its own campus here, which would accommodate 1,000 people, with a big investment. The Tesco Group has turnover of $55 billion and has 2,318 stores, employing 3,26,000 people in the 12 countries they operate.
Mr Philip Greenwood, Head of IT and Support, Tesco HSC, said that the company had been running different applications at each of their subsidiaries and now want to use retail application called Retek, a business application from a US firm, across the world. “We foresee Bangalore would be contributing to this project as well as Tesco's business needs in co-ordination with the UK headquarters," he added.
