I personally prefer the Fedora Core line as well. However I have heard people recommend Ubuntu and SuSe. All of these have free versions. Whichever you go for, make sure it comes with both the Gnome and KDE desktops by default, that way you can decide which GUI you like better.

Yes your system should support Linux fine. You will need to make sure to write down the components (video card, sound card, nic, etc.) to make sure you configure it properly; not everything is fully recognized by Linux because a lot of the drivers are proprietary and written for Linux only.

Ubuntu (or Kubuntu), Fedora, openSUSE, freeBSD, Mandriva are good Linux distributions. Unlike windows Linux can run many GUI. The most known are GNOME, KDE and XFCE (which usually come either with the entire distribution like SUSE, Fedora or on separate cd's like Ubuntu which uses GNOME, Kubuntu which uses KDE and Xubuntu which uses XFCE).
BSD isn't really Linux, but it's compatibe with it.

Actually you can keep both on your computer, and chose to start either during boot time. As far as desktop linux is concerned, I think SUSE is great.
