I am not particularly religious, but think that basic laws of most main religions are a good blueprint by.which to live.(thou shallt not steal, kill etc.) Those who are forever quoting the bible and thrusting their religion upon you or making known to all, their great and glorious good deeds, are a pain in the you know where! I would be insulted if someone called me pious.

Pious doesnt mean that you must seclude yourself from the world and be a hermit! You can be modern and still be pious. It's in the heart. If you are pious, i would say that you are complete. you have the best of both worlds. you definately would know how to react in any situations, cos you have been moulded through your religious beliefs, whatever you do will definately be beneficial. Definately pious is not an INSULT.

Pious is a good label. If you are not pious and somebody calls you that then it is sarcasm and is an insult. Holy, devoted to God, those describe piousness, I think.

Yes! It is good to be pious unless you are talking about the fourth definition of the word.

Pious
PI'OUS, a. [L. pius.]

1. Godly; reverencing and honoring the Supreme Being in heart and in the practice of the duties he has enjoined; having due veneration and affection for the character of God, and habitually obeying his commands; religious; devoted to the service of God; applied to persons.

2. Dictated by reverence to God; proceeding from piety; applied to things; as pious awe; pious services of affections; pious sorrow.

3. Having due respect and affection for parents or other relatives; practicing the duties of respect and affection towards parents or other near relatives.

4. Practiced under the pretense of religion; as pious frauds.

I always understood the word to mean 'Holier than thou'
Religious pretense and hypocrisy. Self-Righteousness.
Normally when people use the word I think it is an insult, and who likes being insulted?
If it can be used meaning 'Spiritual, devoted to God' then that is a compliment to the committed follower of God.

pious - having or showing or expressing reverence for a deity; "pious readings" Antonyms: impious - lacking piety or reverence for a god.
I had to look it up for an honest answer...
Everyone has their own feelings for piety...I must ponder this...........
