I've done it many times by train. Takes 3 days, but it is a great experience.
Major stops would be...
-Singapore
--KL
--Butterworth (10 min ferry to Penang if you're interested)
---Hat Yai
---Surat Thani (boat to Koh Samui/Phan gan if you like)
---Bangkok

No need to stop in Hat Yai or Surat Thani. You can skip Butterworth also, tho Penang might be worth a visit if you want to break it up.

Border crossings involve taking your bags off the train....walking through an immigration/customs building and then get back on the same train...

You can get tickets from any of these points to any other point.
Unless it's a national holiday, you should be okay booking a day or two in advance. New Year, etc...will require more advance.

Quality of trains are great in Malaysia and Singapore. Not quite as good in Thailand, but nothing like India..

They're cheap and you can get food en-route and at stations.

Budget airlines are what you'd expect, but if you have the time and inclination, it's a fun train trip...

Not an easy trip, but if you have time and are interested in Malaysia it could be good. Flying from Thailand to Singapore is really cheap within Thailand...usually under $100 US for a round trip. It would be a brutal trip to go straight through via land. Take two weeks and it would be fun to travel by land.

Hi, it is very easy to do either. Fastest is of course flying. Budget airlines get you to Bangkok or Chiangmai for about US$100 return. You may get better rate if you book way in advance as the price goes up as departure day nears. There are 3 budget airlines viz Jetstar, Tiger Airways and Air Asia. Get you back and forth in about 2.5 hours per leg. If you fly to Hat yai, this is only 1.5 hours away!

By road means, there is train, bus or car. There is express train service to Bangkok, though you will have to check its schedule for the day. Other train service will involve more stops and take a longer time to get there.

Bus service do operate between Singapore and Thailand, specifically to Hat Yai and Bangkok. It will be an almost a 12 to 18 hours ride to each destination respectively.

Driving is an option where you can stop and go at your leisure. getting to Hat Yai can be done in 10 hours, with another 6 to get to Bangkok. There is a highway linking Singapore all the way to bangkok, so it will not be difficult to do so. You will be passing places probably at a more leisurely pace.

A train ride would be the best option if you must be land. It can expensive and somewhat long if you have to transfer which you probably will . Bus would seem like a nightmare to me, can even bare the thought of it. Flying is cheap and easy, the best way to go.
