I know the rules, they were drilled into me forever as a child. When I was about 23 the toast would not stay down in the toaster and I was frustrated so I put both hands in the bottom of each slice holder to try and make them 'click' down. Next thing I knew I was thrown clear across the room. It wasn't like a harsh tingle shock like you get off turning the kettle on at the wall with wet hands. It was scary. Afterwards, I was surprised I was alive. It was full on. If you are aware of the way that the universe works, I am sure you are aware that now you have boasted about your luck, that the next time you put the knife in you will be sorry.

Well, most likely with the toasters that are available since the 70's you would not have gotten a very sever shock at all. The grounding of the unit would have, and most likely has stopped that from happening. Electricity takes the path of least resistance, and with the toaster off from the attempt to pop up, the electricity is off to most parts off the toaster and to all parts that a knife could get to normally. Sooooo while it is not a good thing to use a knife on a toaster, it is not the dangerous thing portrayed in the movies or on T.V.

How long ago was this a week, year, several years? Maybe you should move on and give your attention to things that may need it. Learn from your mistake and don't do it again. If for some reason you put the knife in the toaster and get electrocuted well then it was finally your time. :) good luck

No, it's not really that dangerous. The manufacturers are aware that the world is chock full of dolts, and as such include a feedback fuse that will fry the toaster before it fries you. You might get a shock, but it won't kill you.

its safer to use one piece of a chopstick (its wood) or a long toothpick. Sometimes its safer to insert the knife thru the bread from the top and pull up than what you normally do. Yes, you escape death each time you get the bread out unharmed. Next time, use a toaster over instead of a bread toaster. It does the same thing and its safer than the popping type.

You would have gotten a shock , but I don't think it would be too bad unless you broke something inside the toaster. By the way~~~they do have small wooden tongs to get the toast out.

I used to do the same thing. Then one day my mother saw me do and made me promise I would never do it again.
I don't know if you can really get electrocuted. BUT I don't want to find out.

try unplugging it. or many toasters come with a little handle that will push the toast a little higher.
