Hot and warm beer is vastly misunderstood in my opinion. It is true that some beers should be served warmER than others, but usually that really only means something like 50 degrees F. Guinness is the most misunderstood... alot of people who try to act more sophisticated than they are will serve Guinness at room temperature or at least slightly below room temp, and this has become so widespread that Guinness has actually started printing instructions on its bottles specifically telling you to chill the beer.
There is a reason behind the different temperatures. It's all in your tastebuds. When you drink something really cold, some of your tastebuds shut off, they don't work. Therefore if there is a particular hint of a taste in a particular beer that is supposed to be picked up by these taste buds that have been shut off, the beer will taste simply like cold beer, when if you would have served it a little warmer, like between 45 and 55 degrees, suddenly you get this explosion of flavors that you have never thought would be possible before. The Trappist beers from Belgium is probably the best example about this.
It can go the other way too. Say you have a crappy beer with some extra tastes that are bad... if you serve it warmer, you'll most definitely taste the bad stuff. However, if you serve this cheap beer "ice cold", these taste buds shut off and the beer tastes much better.
So basically, the amateurs who drink cheap mass-produced beer will probably answer this question with "ice cold", the people who are trying to be more sophisticated than they are will probably answer "warm, or slightly below room temperature", and the real beer drinkers will probably say something like "45-50 degrees".

Stegmaier Gold Medal beer - You keep some 16 ounce returnables in the refrigerator (cold), and some in the case (warm). You open a warm one and a cold one an pour them into the same glass.

I like the bottle to be frosty cold. Sometime I'll run cold water on the bottles and put it in the freezer for about 5-10 minutes just for the bottles to chill slighty.Cold beer is best.

Different beers call for different temperatures.
Guiness for instance is traditionally served just below room temperature. Certain Ales the same thing.
Any cheap beers (which I tend to like many times), like Bud, Miller, etc, I would far prefer be very cold.

American beers are served ice cold, in the United States, to hide the fact that they taste particularly nasty at cellar temperature....the proper beer drinking temperature.
