Could it be the Thar Desert, which was the subject of a disaterous and ill conceived irrigation project in the 1950s. This just destroyed the soil and brought up the salinity.

Yes. Thar Desert or The Rajasthan State of India is the right Answer but unfortunatly and STRANGLY the area is flooded right now ^^ because of the heavy rains this year :)
