I have two cats who have lived with each other for almost 2yrs now and the older cat, who was here first is very territorial of the litter box and wont let my other cat poop in it. I've tried two litter boxes and my older cat will then use both of them.

Never heard of that problem before, I have 3 cats here and they all share the 2 litter boxes no problem. The only solution would be buy two litter boxes and put them in different rooms no way the one cat can protect both at the same time.

This is a tough one. I have 2 cats, a male and a female, 1 and 2 years old. I have 2 litter boxes, but only need one. They both use the same one and very seldom the other. Initially, the older cat, the male, did not like it when the female used his box. He would actually sit and stare at her when she used it, then immediately after he would get in the box and use it too- to cover her scent. He eventually got over it. Keep the boxes very clean, scoop 2 or 3 times a day. You can also try putting the boxes in separate rooms, with doors. Several times a day, shut one cat in each room for an hour or so; hopefully they will have to go while in the room and use the litter box. Once started, they should use it thereafter. When you put them in their rooms, make sure you put them in the same room every time ( cat #1 to room #1 and cat #2 to room #2 every time). This may work if you keep at it consistently. If both of your cats are male, this may explain the behavior; males especially are very territorial. Also, spaying and neutering may help some with this issue.

Some cats will just use any litter box that is available.

Your older cat is probably indicating his dominance/territorial claims over the other one by marking both litterboxes as his.

You could try a third box. Also, seperate where in the house they are located. Find out where your new cat hangs out most or where the older cat doesn't go. That area is likely the small amount of territory claimed by the new cat or at least not claimed by the old one.

Besides, having extra litter boxes is better for the cats, they like choices and it encourages good litterbox use.

Place the extra litterbox there.

Good luck.

I think the rule was the number of cats + 1 = the number of litter boxes. Don't know how that will change your older cat's behaviour... I think you should hover nearby and discourage the elder cat whenever s/he tries to stop the younger one from using the litter. In a while the elder cat will get the idea that the behaviour is wrong.

It should be at least two litterboxes for two cats, though, a single litterbox is not enough.

We have 4 cats who all share 2 boxes. One they will all poop in and the other they will only pee in. Every cat is different. You can get some to easily use boxes together, others will not. How do you have it set up with 2 boxes? If they are in the same area, I would try to place them differently. Maybe place one in a bathroom and the other in a different room. See if that may help. You may not be able to resolve the issue if one cat is very picky about who uses that box.

I have 2 cats a mother and her 6 weeks little kitten .. they are not fighting or anything over the litter boxes but then the mother uses both the one placed for the little kitten and the one just for her .. to solve this problem I put the litter for the kitten under the bookshelf where it is not high enough for the mom to use but high and comfortable enough for the kitten
maybe you can find a place like that?!

Yes. Cats are territorial. The older one is being a bully - put the younger one in a separate room with his own litter box, and if the older cat goes near it, squirt him with a small water sprayer (like a small water pistol or plant sprayer set on stream).

You can't get two cats to share one litter box....impossible. Your other cat has behavioural problems and you need to speak to a pet specialist to solve that problem.

The older cat has to learn some things are not hers/his
