I recommend that you don't use "qué pasa" and especially "qué paso" because this verb sometimes means that something bad is happening. It's kind of like asking, "What's wrong?"
In Mexico, an informal greeting that I sometimes heard is "¿Qué onda?" But "que tal" and "cómo estás", used all over the Spanish-speaking world, work as well.

in english is very common to say what's up but in spanish it really sounds stupid to say "Que paso" unless something really happened in that moment such as an accident but now is used in the same way as english as a form to say hi
Unfortunately we listen to slang every single freaking day in spanish-english speaking communities so ppl made exact translations to this kind of expressions even if the meaning it's completely different and shouldn't never happened but oh well at this point no1 can do anything to stop this madness

I live in Texas. As far as I know they say "Que paso?" (kay posso)
A loose translation is "What is happening with you?"
