VHS will be extinct in around 5 years.
The advantage of a DVD recorder is not only the superior quality of picture and sound, but the ability to make chapter marks. this means no more fast-forwarding to the programme you wish to watch. Not only that but some DVD recorders also allow the ability of "time slip." A feature that allows you to record the programme you're watching and then pause it so you resume the programme from that exact same position.
However having said that the days of the DVD may be numbered in a few years too with the imminent release of HDVD and Blueray. The benifit of both of these formats is the increased size capacity and higher picture quality. A must for HD TV owners in years to come!
One of the best options on the market at the moment may be a combined hard drive with DVD recorder. That way you can record straight onto the hard drive without using any DVD's. Then if you need to watch the programme somewhere else you can copy it from the hard drive to the DVD.
I hope this helps.

DVD is better sound and Quality also the picture is a 100 times better.
VCR may be cheap because there becoming extinct except in a DVD/VCR recorder where you can record from Video tape to DVD.
Basically you'd be silly to buy a VCR as in about 5 yrs time they won't be around any more, HD (high Definition) and DVD are the way of the future...
You'll only end up with a piece of equipment you'll end up binning, Mine is gathering dust in the shed...

DVDs are far higher quality to watch. you can skip straight to the part you want on DVD rather than rewinding or fast forwarding like a video tape.If you have a DVD collection it will take up a bout a quarter of the space a video collection would.DVDs are not easily damaged and won't wear out like video tapes.Lots of reasons to use a DVD player as opposed to a VCR, weather it be recording or just for play back.

I have both and find the quality of the DVD is far far better, and the storage of the DVD's take upa way less room....if you just want to watch DVD's and not record from your TV then Argos do a cheap DVD player for £17.89 and go up from there, so you would be wasting your money on VCR really. Log on to Argos site and see the selection and you can reserve one at your local store.

Its also easier to skip through a DVD to find a certain part for example. The DVD film is split into various chapters which will play one after the other to show the whole film or you can move instantly from one chapter to the next, with no FAST FORWARD - ooh errr back a bit, forward a bit more.
The there is also the fact that very often DVD films come with extras. Such as interviews with actors, directors and suchlike. Often you will find 'The Making Of........'.

It's because the digital quality of the DVD disc is better than the analogue picture of the VHS cassette. The DVD is not prone to wear either, unlike the VHS tape

Apart from all the business about it being far better quality (so why can't I see how much better it's alleged to be) it's a bloody good way for the electronics trade to make money all over again by doing not much more than re-inventing something in a slightly different form.

Why not buy a machine that plays both VHS and DVD.You can then watch all your old VHS tapes and have the facility to convert them to DVD.These machines are very reasonably priced and excellent value for money and you have the best of both worlds.
