I know that taking medicine sucks. I was diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder (much like schizophrenia) when I was seventeen. Please don't stop taking your pills -- I guarantee you will relapse. You don't want that.

If the medicine you're taking now makes you sleep all the time, talk to your psychiatrist about it. The medicine you're taking is supposed to level you out, not put you down. Your doctor has your best interest in mind, so talk to him or her asap.

I'm assuming you take an anti-psychotic like Zyprexa or Abilify. Not all medicines work the same for everyone. Just hang in there and DON'T STOP OR CHANGE DOSAGES WITHOUT TALKING TO YOUR DOCTOR FIRST!

The psychiatrist I see now is a holistic doctor. So in combination with medication, she also gives me B12 shots which help immensely, and I take Omega-3 Fish Oil. Also, try folic acid. All of these things are natural and help level out your brain chemistry without side effects.

Good luck. :)

Yes, there are alternatives. Some of the medications cause sleepiness while others dont. Simply talk to your psychiatrist, am sure he can fix that problem. But do not get off your meds as there is a good chance that you go back to square one. Ask your doctor about clozapine and seroquel.

I don't know anything about this, except from a friend's mother who is a psychiatric nurse and a family acquaintance whose son was schizophrenic (he was institutionalised after he stopped taking his meds secretly). I've heard it's common for schizophrenics to stop taking their meds and then everything gets a thousand times worse. Don't do it! Talk to your doctor.

Just do a google search on 'schizophrenics stop taking medication' and you will see what I mean.

Keep talking to your doctor. Don't try anything knew without asking him. You don't want to get sick again. Tell him you hate how they make you feel, and ask him to come up with alternatives. Or find names of alternatives in books or nhs websites and ask him what he thinks of them. But keep him on side.

I agree with the first answer, you are much better off with medication than without, but there may be newer drugs that are more specific in their action and don't make you feel drowsy available. Ask your psychiatrist.

Maybe look into traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It isn't covered by most health insurance and is pretty expensive, but maybe it can help. In the meantime, stay on your meds.

Go to the doc before you do anything..you dont want to just get off your meds right away I am sure depending on what you are taking that you have to wean yourself off..It may take time to adjust to the meds..give it time..
