I have just bought a male kitten. Hes 9 weeks old and seems to have endless energy. Hes really sweet and social, but hes a bit hyperactive (maybe a lot). Every mornin he jumps on our bed at 6am and starts atacking us and our feet and licking our faces and playing with my hair. He runs around all the time. He atacks our feet as we walk around the apartment. He also wont eat dry food (royal canin) unless its mixed with canned food. How do I get him to stop atacks and to eat normal food?

Hi there,

there is not much you can do about the energy levels, short of playing with him so much he's too tired to wake up so early. I suggest getting a lazer pointer - you can relax, and he can run madly around the house following the little red dot!

As people mentioned before, he will calm down as he gets older!

as far as the food thing is concerned, male kitties are often prone to bladder infections or crystals developing in their urethra, so letting him eat wet food too will keep his water levels up and will make sure that he stays healthy. If you don't want him to eat wet food, perhaps moisten a little amount of dry food with hot water in the mornings and evenings for breakfast and supper, and leave dry pellets out all day. That way, he's eating the food you want, and getting enough water!

Have fun with him, you will actually miss the craziness when he's a big lazy tomcat!

He is being a kitten. Cats by nature get bored easily though. Make sure he has lots of things to play with and start teaching him limitations. If you don't want him attacking your feet, tell him no or try a small squirt gun/bottle. He'll learn really fast that that is something he shouldn't be doing. As for the food, he is still small. He may want the food mixed because the moist food makes the dry food softer for him to chew. See if he eats the dry food if you put a little water in it, or start to slowly phase out the canned food from his dry. Give him a little time, but he will adjust.

He's just being a kitten, mine is slowly growing out of it at 7mths, sleeps more now. Get him some toys, light balls about 1inch in diameter gave mykitty heaps of fun. Anything that moved so she could stalk it was great, pet fluffy mouse. Hanging things from thes doorknobs such as small toys with feather/bells attached.
Just keep him occupied, oh dont forget to get him fixed when he gets a bit older.
I also had a huge problem with mine climbing the net curtains! I used the water spray method, now as soon as he hears the noise he runs!
Works so good for anything u dont want them to do. Please dont hit him as I have read other people say, use the water spray.
I have also started to allow him to go outside now he is fixed, so he wont stray, but he has a curfew of 5pm!! thats dinner time so he comes home (just like a guy!! lol) Not allowed out after dark cos thats when cats go ahunting and our native animals have enought to contend with.
I give him dried food (good stuff ) af a morning, if he doesn tlike it, too bad, he gets his tinned food at 5pm, thats it.
Oh the toe thing in the bed? still working on that one lol. He also still does flakey half hours where he runs around thehouse likea lunatic, trying to climb everything
But hes definitly settling down as time goes on, I was totally freaked when I first got him, but time and patience is paying off

no problem at all .. you can solve this problem in many ways ..
if you want to sleep more just close your door and let him sleep outside
you can buy the kitten some toys some that could be hung so he'll feel that someone is playing with him
or then you can get him a friend to play with .. another kitten .. but then what if the other decided to play with yours in the morning on your bed .. that is something you should think of :-)
I think the best solution is to let the kitten have more toys .. and for a while just keep the kitten outside the bedroom just for a while .. then when he gets new habits you can open the door again

If you want the kitty to not focus so much energy playing with you, you should get another kitty. They will have a blast together and wear each other out playing, and then they'll be more calm towards you. Even as I type, my three are seeing who can charge through the house the fastest (even the one with the lampshade collar on!). For the food, just mix less canned food with the dry and gradually wean him off the canned food. Enjoy your new kitty!

He's only young, and this is a stage they go through, they have all the energy in the world, you have to try and tire him out by playing with him lots during the early evening and try and keep him awake until you go to bed, this should help to keep him sleeping while you are. Also, try and keep your door closed, he may cry but it's better to let him get used to sleeping on his own and that your room is YOUR space, not his. Don't worry, they calm down when they get to about a year old!

He is just being a kitten. Make sure he has enough toys including toys that hang. It sounds like he may be bored.

As for his food, try moistening the dry food with a little warm water, if he is teething or getting ready to lose his milk teeth, the straight dry might hurt too much to chew.

That is very normal for a kitten his age. Especially that you recently purchased him and he is experiencing a new home from the pet shop or wherever you got him. He will always have a playful side, but the attacks will just have to stop with time. Another thing is they will become less "excited" like that after you neuter them.

He's a kitten! That's what they do, kind of cute really. One thing that works if you don't want to wait till he grows out of it is a water spray bottle. Hit him in the face with a quick mist shot and he'll bolt off like a rocket. But only use it when teaching him right and wrong.
