What is the whole concept of numbers? In ancient times, people came to understand that order was needed in their lives. They had to know what was happening, and numbering is among the most primitive forms of order in human experience. Count. How many wives? How many children? How many mouths to feed? How many animals to feed them?

So mathematics developed long before it was formalized as something to make kids think in school. But be grateful for every opportunity to think, and mathematics CAN BE a very useful tool in thinking. Depends on how you approach it. If you take the time to learn to "think in that language," the way someone learning a foreign tongue would say, you can then do so many other things you may want to do. Everyone mentions "science," but there is also the master craftsman, and his measuring and calibrating and being very precise with all his tools, including his pocket calculator. And a computer is another tool, whether used in an obviously mathematical form or not.

And there is the artist of whatever stripe or form. Ask anyone you respect, and you will find that they can do better whatever it is they do if they can use the language of basic math when they have something they want to do. A sculpture must figure his costs of materials, a painter needs to understand the dimensions and scales in his painting, and they all need well-calibrated tools to do what they want to do.

I'm not great at math, because I started too late to appreciate it the way I think a kid can do now. We used to have to memorize the multiplication tables, and frankly, that's time wasted that you kids don't need do. But to understand exactly how to do what it is you want to do with great precision, you will need to know the language of math. It is time well spent, and if your public school does not know how to teach it well, here you are on the Internet, with hundreds if not thousands, of nifty tools to help you learn to love it. You will love it when you see it solving problems you actually care about, not just exercises in a textbook.

Math is number that bridges people into discovering advance technology and changes the way our lives into more complex society. I have seen the benefits of Math more than I can describe but I am not good in Math. I would have my career in Space technology instead of Case worker and job coaching. It is too bad otherwise, You will see my name at NASA as a scientist who will prepare NASA to the Moon 9 years from now.

I like auntb93's answer. I liked math in school but it didn't like me. There were occasions when I worked out the answer to algebra questions that the A students got wrong. YEA!

"Math; it's a good thing." An off take on Martha Steward's "It's a good thing."

Math the conspiracy with numbers meant to confuse us all into a state of mental fatigue and enslave our minds, forcing us to become mindless drones for some guy named Bob doing his calculations and other crap in a tiny cubicle that has a hand in the developing and making of toxic waste that poisons the water of 3rd world countries, which in turn develop into modern nations that declare war on us and annihilate all life as we know it with very dangerous chemicals they " just so happen " to find.

Mat is learning rules and how they apply to written symbols called numbers. By learning the rules and symbols you can do needed stuff and real interesting stuff. At first it is pain like learning how to spell and write your names. By learning another written symbol called letters and rules how to use them you were able to write your question.
By learning another written symbol number and rules someday you might fly to the moon or know how to help those that do fly in outer scape to do it as safely a possible.
