It depends on the country and the community, as well as cultures. In modern places they are slaughtered at a slaughter house. In some places, they can do it anywhere they want. In the Zulu culture they tie the cow to a telephone pole or fence and slit its throat. There are many ways to slaughter an animal. The most efficient is decapitation or a bullet to the brain, then there's no suffering!

In slaughter houses. In the US there large scale slaughter house "factories" that process so many animals in a day that they have rail road tracks that run right up to the doors. As well, there are the smaller local slaughter houses usually located in or around rural areas were the animals are raised.
