They are both good, but you have to realise that Fremantle is only a 30 minute train ride from Perth, its a suburb. A lot of travel guides give the impression that they are separate cities.

Perth is more central to the touristy things, but a bit quiet in the city on weekends. Fremantle is further out, but the place has a great vibe, good pubs, restraunts and night life.....yeah I`d stay in Freo. Have a good time!

I've been to both. freemantle is a small city just outside of Perth. They have bus lines that can take you into town if need be. As with most cities, it's probably a little more expensive in town then out so if you're looking to save a little money, commuting might be your option. Freemantle itslef is rather drab and uneventful. Byt Perth is nice. Rape seems to be an issue there tho. The laws and the police aren't very helpful to the victims. I met and became aquainted with a woman while there. She, herself, had been violated but lost her case because the judge felt her personal choice in clothing had provoked the attack. Otherwise it's a nice place. Good luck.
