I'm a divorced dad and have a fantastic 5-year old daughter. It's getting a bit colder now so she sleeps with warm pj's. I have always heard that little girls should sleep with their panties on but recently heard the contrary. Which one is the healthiest for her ? Thank you !

PEDIA is way off on the nanny bit. You do not need to hire a nanny to dress your kid because you are a male. What kind of answer is that coming from a pediatrician??

Anyway, let you daughter decide. I agree with the answer above though, if she is weating a nightgown, undies are a must!

Well to the best of my knowledge, as long as the underwear is cotton and so are the pajamas, it doesn't really make a difference.
The cotton allows the area to get plenty of air circulation. If her jammies are a synthetic or synthetic blend, then stick with the panties. She shouldn't have nylon or polyester against her skin at that age. Read the label to find out what the pj's are made out of. Then ask your daughter how she wants to sleep, with or without. Since she's 5 and used to underwear, she'll probably want to stay in them.
I personally am in favor of wearing underwear to bed for children.
1. Modesty.
2. Keeps scratchy fabrics away from sensitive skin.
3. It's a smart habit for later on when they are at sleepovers.

There's nothing at all wrong with anybody sleeping naked and it's definitely healthier for girls not to wear panties to help avoid vaginal infections. Being cooler and exposed to hair is definitely healthier in that respect. That the boys have never worn underwear indicates that you don't believe in underwear for boys or you would have started them out wearing underwear. You mention that you and your husband sleep naked, but not if you wear underwear. My guess is that your husband at least doesn't wear underwear and so you didn't feel the need for your boys to wear them either. In any case I don't think boys should wear underwear in general and the fact that they've made it this far without wearing them makes it clear that they are not needed. By now James has probably had to change for gym class and other boys have seen that he doesn't wear underwear. That is usually the biggest hurdle for guys who don't wear underwear and since he's still not wearing underwear I suspect it was not a big deal. There's no point in the boys starting to wear underwear now. I think it's healthier not to wear underwear, but for young girls I think they should wear underwear if they wear dresses or skirts. I think they should be able to run and jump and play on the jungle gym or whatever without having to worry about exposing themselves. There's no value in discouraging them from physical activity because of their lack of underwear. What's more unhealthy than underwear is starting out life as a sedentary overweight child. If they are wearing jeans or shorts then I don't see the need for them to wear underwear any more than boys.

I've never had any daughters, but I would think that personal comfort would dictate whether or not they would sleep with underwear on.

If they do they should be wearing clean and fresh underwear to bed. Generally, for boys or girls, loose underwear is a little better for sleeping since it would be more likely to be clean overnight.

They should change it at least daily and should also be bathing on a regular, if not daily basis.

p.j's no undies. Nighties wear undies. That is the rule in our house. As undies are cotton there is no reason to worry about "airing " things. It is just a matter of comfort. Undies should be worn with a nightie I believe so girls aren't showing there vagina's while they wriggle do somersaults dance or whatever they are doing before bed that makes the nightie ride up

i have worn panties all my life and i dont have any health issues.I also have a 4 year old daughter and ever since she has been potty trained she has worn nickers all day every day. I would say its proberly cleaner for the child to wear panties as this will stop sand and other stuff getting to her private parts. As long as you change them every day its ok

I do! I have heard the same thing but I have done it forever just out of comfort. I really like to take a shower right before bed and sleep completely naked. Feels sooooo good!

100% cotton panties that aren't tight are the best way to go. She can change them as frequently as you see fit. I have never heard of their being any benefits to going without and im in the medical profession.
