it could be that your body just doesn't have a high tolerance for pain and the symptoms you are now feeling are related to pain-anxiety...

tetanus, which is a disease caused by bacteria found in soil, dust, and animal waste-can easily be spread through things such as nails, animal bites, and other metal/glass objects that you can step on. that is why it is recommended you receive a tetanus shot every 10 years and are given one every time you injure yourself if it's been more than 10 years since your last one...

you're symptoms are nothing close to the symptoms associated with tetanus..these symptoms are muscle weakness, muscle cramps, irritability, muscle spasms, and difficulty moving the jaw....

symptoms associated with pain and anxiety are:

-sweating
-dizziness
-feeling faint or passing out
-nausea/vomiting
-headache
-heart palpitations

you're probably just anxious about getting sick from stepping on the nail or your body is reacting poorly to the pain you are feeling...

-lie down
-get something cold to drink and take small sips every few mintues
-place a cool wash rag on your forehead
-take slow, deep breaths to slow down your heartrate and blood pressure

if after about 30 minutes of doing this, you still feel like you are going to pass out and are very dizzy-call 911 or have someone take you to the emergency room to get checked out.

it is best to get in to see your doctor within 24 hours just so they can take a look at your injury and make sure you don't need medication or treatment....

If you are now just starting to feel sick, it could be a number of things. Stepping on a nail is no simple matter.

Where was the nail, at work, at your house, outside, inside? There is a whole host of problems that metal breaking the skin to bleed can bring about. go see a doctor and make sure your tetnus and DPT shots are up to date as well as anything else normally vaccinated for. Just like your pets, keep your own shots in order!

As far as feeling sick now, it could be the come down of shock, adrenaline or the medication you have taken to alleviate the pain. Some people have an allergy to pennicillian, which can include all forms of medication ending in the letters -cillian. If for some reason you took pennicillian to fight the infection that could be the source of your issues. Also some people report stomach discomfort from over the counter medications like Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Advil, Aspirin. It does what it needs to, but again allergies can develop in regards to these medications aswell.

Adrenaline always comes into play to help you survive one way or another. That quick jerking motion you probably did after you realized you just stepped on the nail was your bodies reaction. Foot go down, ow, nerve reflex, foot go up, boom! adrenaline. Adrenaline is the first thing your body does when it is injured in any one way or another. When you come down from the adrenaline high, you might become physically sick...or the shock of the adrenaline dose depleting might be making you physically sick.

Also, infection might just now be stepping up and into play. infection makes the body react to distroy the intruder infectants and can make you run a fever or again...physically sick.

I suggest seeing a doctor either yours or someone else's to make sure there is nothing out of the ordinary about your nail stepping. :P

I'm always barefoot so I've stepped on lots of stuff... the thing I hate most to step on is snails and slugs. Apart from being harder to wash off than most other dirt (even dog poo or cat barf, that smells but comes off real easy), I also don't like killing an innocent critter so I hate the sad little crunch their shell gives. I've also stepped on a bee once (before I regularly went barefoot) but since I'm not sensitive to bee stings at all, while it hurt like a hard needle prick, as soon as I pulled it out it went down and ten minutes later I couldn't tell where exactly it had been. And we don't have any poisonous animals in my country, the scorpion and stone fish named previously should probably win!

You may be getting an infection. Go see a doctor. If you haven't had a tetanus shot in the past ten years you should go get one.
