Receding gums are due to tartar deposited in the bottom of the teeth. Take an appointment with a Dentist and get professional clean up of your teeth.
Please see the webpages for more details on Periodontal disease.

A dentist once told me that the cause of receding gums is lack of stimulation to the gums. He said people should massage their gums every day to prevent it. I'm surprised more dentists don't tell patients that fact.

It could be gingivitis or periodontal disease... age doesn't matter if you don't take care of your teeth and gums. Without the proper care it can start at 25 just as easily as 45.

Not flossing which leads to Periondontal Disease (Gingivitis). When you start to floss, go easy, you'll notice bleeding. This is normal, as you continue to floss, the bleeding will decrease. Twice a day you should rinse with Chlorhexidine Gluconate (ProDentix .12%). The bleeding will stop, and you're comes will grow tighter again. SEE YOUR DENTIST.
