all travel agencies are not much help at this point only offering us really expensive places to stay. Anyone got ideas

yeah it will be sold out.
it will be really helpful if u have relatives owning hoels or something
otherwise , u r hopeless

Ko Samui is should just be your first stop. If I were you I would go to Ko Phangan! If you catch New Years when not on a full moon you should have no problem getting a bungalow.

Go to www.asiarooms.com and check out availability online. The year end and the new year is considered peak period in Thailand, so it is best to try to book early if you want to go there.

New Year's is considered peak season in most resorts in SE Asia. I suggest you book early as now as flights will be fully booked as well.
