I feel really bad for buying a $400 brand new wedding gown so I looked into renting or buying a used one. I am not going to save my dress if I buy one. What are the pros and cons of buying used, buying new, or renting. I appreciate your opinion!

You are using it only for 1 day. It make more sense if you rent or buy used wedding gown.

The pros:
1. Get nicer dress for cheaper price.
2. Spend the money for something more essential: make-up, photograph, wedding ring

The cons:
1. Almost nothing

First of all $400 is a freakin' steal for a brand new wedding dress!

Renting a gown: It's going to be way more expensive than buying in the long run, because you have to pay for alterations. And it has to be done through their people. Plus you have to worry about returning it on time. And heaven forbid you damage it. You're going to end up paying WAY more than $400 for renting a wedding dress.

Buying used: Unless you try the dress on yourself, you really have NO IDEA what it looks like on you. I ended up buying a dress that was nothing like what I thought it would be just because things look different on you than what you thought they would. And once again, alterations, alterations, alterations. These were already shaped to fit someone else's body perfectly.

Buying new: Even when David's Bridal is not having a sample sale, they still have dresses as cheap as $299-$399. You get to try it on at the store, wide selection. You have more buying power there. You may get away without alterations because the dress was not previously suited to someone else. Just a standard size. And you can always sell it on E-Bay. Good luck to you!

Just got married and thought the same thing. I actually bought a great dress at Macy's on clearance for less than $100. There is no sense is saving a dress that you can never wear again. Why spend the money on all that? Renting is an option: it will cost about $150 to $200 based on any major alterations, just like a tux, but at least you don't have to preserve the darn thing with moth balls! Of course, saving...there is that plan of having the blushing daughter in your dress down the road. By that time, I think she would have her own ideas of the perfect dress. I say, rent. If not, buy used. There are some great deals out there!

You can buy new dresses fairly inexpensively online at stores like Pearlsplace.com or Bridesave.com. Some people even suggest Ebay but you have to be very careful there since alot of people will rip you off saying they have a designer dress or knockoff which isn't even remotely similar and the dress may not even be what they show in the pics.

I personally would not want to buy used, not because I'm against wearing other people's clothes. But the dress has been altered to their measurements, which will be different from yours. It probably won't look as nice when it's taken out to fit you.

I have heard of brides renting dresses. Your selection may be fairly limited first off. Then you won't be able to do any major alterations. If you're petite, you won't be able to have it shortened at all.

A great place to look for inexpensive dresses is actually the special occasion section at major dept stores. You can find something there usually for $200 or less. Also alot of malls have "prom shops" for lack of a better word that sell special occasion dresses year round that are in the same price range.

I think you should save your dress. Pass it on to your daughter. If you scour the internet, you can find new gowns at a steal...I mean amazing gowns for half the price you're thinking of paying. That's how I got mine.
You can save a lot of money, and some space in your closet if you rent a gown. If you're not sentimental at all, then that would be a good option for you. However, if you are sentimental, have your maid of honor help you to hunt for the perfect gown. Note: It is like looking for an apartment in NYC.
Good luck to you!

i don't believe of shopping for a used gown is a poor concept (after all, you get to maintain a lot of money!), yet you do favor to understand some issues first. If the gown has been worn formerly it can have some flaws/small upkeep that favor to be addressed. Weddings could be difficult on a gown. there will be some loose threads/beading/gentle lace which could desire some seeing too. usually it really is minor, even with the undeniable fact that it really is something to maintain in ideas. also, if the gown has been worn locate out if this is been dry-wiped clean through a respected dry-purifier that has journey with cleansing wedding ceremony clothing. locate out if there are any stains on the gown (you possibly is surely not in a position to do something about a stain if it did not come out in dry-cleansing). you could nevertheless favor to do adjustments to the gown (the skirt length, as an get mutually) so as that it matches you completely. also in case you purchase on line you received't extremely understand how the gown sits on you till you get to attempt it on. attempt on a lot of clothing in boutiques so that you've an extremely good concept of what seems good on you. and provides your self a lot of time to make any neccessary adjustments once you recieve your gown. Having stated all of that, I have considered a lot of proper clothing that once repairing some beads and threads and really of sweet sixteen tailoring so that they extra healthful completely have appeared surely incredible (and for a fragment of the cost). purely ascertain you analyze extremely properly so that you've an extremely good understanding of what you're paying for.

You are an intelligent young lady Here's the 411. Rent!! Think about it--If you can rent a dress for a day (Let's say a Vera Wang) and have 10 thousand pictures--Do the rental and enjoy the memories for the rest of your life

Unfortunately, $400 is not much for a wedding gown these days. I agree with the concept of having it professionally preserved to pass on to your daughter(s). Perhaps it will start a tradition in your family, and with 21st Century preservation methods a great-granddaughter might wear it one day!
