You don't have to be afraid because the worst thing he can say is that you he isn't interested but you could tell him how you feel which would be the most logical answer. You never know he might feel the same about you and since he thinks you like his friend then he is afraid to say anything to you. Love only comes once so don't let a good thing slip through your fingers just because you are worried about what he will say. If he is a gentleman he wouldn't say anything rude but he might say I am sorry but I have a girlfriend. Good Luck.
