Is it just me, or does it seem like people are just having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that we are just a species of animal. Why don't we want to realize that we are just something that evolved on this planet at some time in the earth's history that cannot be historically accounted for in any of the world's religious doctrines. They all say things that have been proven wrong by today's technology. I think our world can start to move in the right direction if we can all just get out of the dark ages and give up our supernatural imaginations. After all, sooner or later, some big rock is just going to crash into the earth and wipe out mankind anyway. Then maybe someday, someone will be digging up our bones along with the dinosaurs' and wonder why these animals weren't recorded in their crazy religious text.
Food for thought.

Well, your first comment comparing us to animals is interesting. We are physical creatures...but there is something more to us than the animals. Animals only have instinct. But we, look up a t the stars and "wonder".....what is beyond thos stars?...what are they made of?...or any of several little things we might think about. My point is...animals don't "wonder"...they can't.....they can't compose a sonata...ponder thoughts....or love...all they got is instinct.

You ever see a fox or dog come across a dead "one of it's own"? You can tell that there is no sense of loss...no feelings hurt. Science studied this fact for years in the late 40's into the 50's. I don't need to talk to a dog or cat and ask them anything how they feel, because it's OBVIOUS that they don't...they are pure instinct and it shows.

Now, think of someone you love....Ok, now prove it...prove you love them....can you? How would you do that? You basically can't...there is nothing you can do to or for that person that someone else (who doesn't love them) can't do either...

You see what I'm getting at? There IS a differnce between us and animals. (though some people do decide to lower them selves to the level of animal)

And I was wondering what Christians say that has been "proven wrong by todays technology"? That's a pretty broad statement. If you mean that the early Christians used to say "bless you" after someone sneezed because they thought you were expelling an evil spirit or something....then yeah, that was a little out there....but the only thing I can think that a modern person like yourself could be talking about might be evolution and how it conflicts with what those Christian's believe.

Well my friend....if you believe evolution happened, or that there is even ALMOST a little tiny bit of evidence to support that theory...then... I hate to be the one to break it you...but you really need to study up on it some more...there really is TOTALLY no evidence of evolution and now way anyone has the ability to prove so either...Oh, and there's no easter bunny either....them's just the facts. Advice: Before you take a poition on something and try to convince others to take your position...do your homework. There's tons of info out there if you really want to find the truth...Truth exists...you just may not like the answers.

Anyway...then again, maybe you were'nt talking about evolution...maybe you were thinking about that flying nun (HINT: It was just a TV show)

This question is simply answered. Standing on your porch, you can watch the sun set in the horizon. You can see the horizon, but you can't see beyond.

In theory, no matter how the scientists seem to explain how we got here, we had to come from something. If we came from a collision of space bodies (big bang) then where did the space bodies come from? We can only see as far as we can think, but it's impossible that the universe appeared from nothingness. Something had to create it. Unfortunately that is beyond our horizon of thinking, and therefore we explain it with our deity. An all powerful being might've at least stopped by to start up the process that led to the earth's creation, which led to evolution. I can't -prove- this theory, but logically -something- had to.

So, we know there's something there past what we can't see. As for it being God or a superior power, I think most of us who actually -think- about religion have faith, because we see how beautiful it is to actually be able to live, think and enjoy both bad and good experiences.

As a former Computer Science major, I know that without a catalyst, nothing will always be nothing. Zero will never be anything besides 0 until you add to it. Then, once its not 0 any more, it can be changed and manipulated.

What do you think caused nothing to become the something that eventually led to our universe and everything that exists?

I have hope and faith that I'm not just some animal spending my 80 or so years breeding and then dying. Something more powerful must've existed to make sure we had the power to ask questions just like this!

My opinions...

No, it isn't just you. Many people are asking the same questions. The problem is, their answers don't add up. Did you know that in the 70's, MIT fed all religious works of signifigance into their mega ai, then fed in all scientific data available against the creation theory? This computer was only given information, with no human bias input. The result was that the computer gave creationism a resounding 'factual' and 'historically and scientifically probable', while it gave man's several theories of evolution an emphatic thumbs down, saying that the scientific evidence simply could not support any of those theories presented. There have been many works of science by preeminent scientists which support the belief in God and Creationism. Look up Men of Science For God. I believe they have a website, and they often speak at world conferences of the Earth's sciences. Beyond that, it sounds as if you are a troubled soul, who has already given up on life. Perhaps you feel as if life could not possibly have meaning to have turned out the way it has for you so far. I'm betting you are quite young yet. Believe me, you have not seen it all, yet. I'm not going to tell you it's going to get better. It might not. But for life to have meaning, there must be pain. It's finding out what we should do about it that makes life worth living. Keep looking. I don't believe you have given up as much as you think you have . May God be with you on your journey.

The presence of God is so obvious in our universe, that we do not take notice or want to acknowledge it. Allow me to show you the presence of God in the work of his creation.

Take the universe as an example. Ever wonder why the planets evolve around each other in a orderly fashion and not in a random fashion. Do you think this happen by co-incidence or by chance for million of years. Ever wonder if the earth is either too far or too near from the sun what will happen to life ? If the panets evevole at a random or move in a random fashom. There is an order in the universe for life to exist on earth.

Take the human body as another eaxmple. Every single organ function in a specific way to give us life. If your body temperaure rise by 0.5 to 1 degress C you will feel unwell. The precision engineering of the human body is far from co-incidnece.

Try shaking all the parts of a mechannical watch in a jar for a 1,000 years . What is the proobabilty that it will become a watch by itself , that you and i can wear today.

Every physical thing that you own today in your house did not happen by chance , but by someone who have the intellignece to put the the parts together to benefit human mankind.
.
What about the universe and the human body ? This cannot happen by chance , but by a creator who is far superior than us.

This person is God. Read the Bible and you will see the fufilmment of many prophecies that is happening today that was foretold thousands of years ago...

I wonder why people believe in God. I also wonder why there is a very small minority of people who believe there is no God. I find it quite amusing sometimes how atheists come to the conclusion that there is no god yet fail to present any scientific evidence to support the claim. Funny how I look at the same "evidence" that they do present and find a deeper belief in God than before. I also find it disturbing that the atheists I have met "know it all", something they accuse Christians of interestingly enough. Atheism is a religion with science as a crutch. Only problem in my mind is that to be a good scientist you must have an open mind and yearning for the truth. Something I find lacking in Atheists, or religious folks either.

People's persistent faith in the Incredible Shrinking God of the Gaps (batteries not included) is a testament to the weaknesses of the human brain.

The malleability of the mind during childhood is one thing that allows superstition to survive. Ever noticed that children who are raised muslim generally stay muslim? Or that those who are raised christian generally stay christian? Or that those raised in secular families generally stay as atheist as they were the moment they were born? Being taught to believe in something as a child imprints that thing on the mind of the child. Beliefs held from early childhood are difficult to let go the longer they are allowed to go unchallenged.

The second major thing that allows superstition to survive is the brain's weakness when it somes to objective critical thinking. The brain doesn't like to question deeply-held beliefs. It generally does what it can to avoid questioning those beliefs, and should a time come when those beliefs are questioned, the brain does a lousy job of quesitoning them objectively.

When presented with information that conflicts with an individual's core beliefs, the brain generally processes the information through the cortexes that deal with emotions, not those that deal with logic and reasoning. It is for this reason that the brain has a hard time overturning strong beliefs.

It's through a combination of the aforementioned malleability of the mind at childhood as well as the brain's stubborness when it somes to critical analysis that allows for the survival of religion and other superstitions.

Because there is a God. I believe in Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost. We lived before this earthy life and we are created in our Heavenly Father's image and we are here on this earth to be tested so that we can return to him in our next life. We didn't just evolve from another species of animal.

I am a believer in the One God Almighty. and I agree very much with the ellaborate views presented above.
I think athiests come to their conclusion just because they are too tired of wondering, lost hope to why should they look up and think, why should they think in the first place,, after all - to them - it is easier to just wander around earth in herds fetching for grass..

P.S: Believers of the holly books of revelation (Jews, Christians, Muslims) say "Bless You" after someone sneezes Not because of any evil spirit or a superficial matter... but because when you sneeze, your heart stops for a fraction of a second.. and you could actually die!

Bless you all

It takes courage and willpower to believe and it is a lot more convenient not to, which explains the tendency of us few.

It strains the mind to think of the unthinkable many times more than to just think of the calculable, which explains the nature of us few.

It takes a high level of risk to plunge into belief system so complex it rattles the brain cells, and some simply can't take it which explains their arrogance to justify your and my ignorance.

Maybe it's just me...maybe it's just you. We'll soon know.

I think that a lot of people believe in God because death is hard to cope with. I don't believe in God but it is a scary thought that when we die there is only blackness. If you have a religion you usually have an afterlife so it isn't such big deal to die.
