If one had Hepatytis B, how could they get rid of the virus? Are there any natural remedies or other types of treatments?

You need to see a gastroenterologist or infectious disease doctor. There are drugs like Hepsera or Pegasys with Ribavirin that will treat HBV. Natural products are treated as food supplements because there is no standardization in the industry (regardless of what the label says). Some herbals may even skew your liver enzyme results- that's why some doctors don't want you to take them with the treatment medications; they want a true picture of your liver. Good luck to you, and remember to check with a doctor. I've noticed a lot of bad advice and incorrect information on these yahoo answer boards.

About 2/3 of the people infected with Hep B will not develop any symptoms and recover completely with acquisition of immunity for life. 5 to 15 % will go on to have chronic hepatitis...these are the people who cannot mount an effective immunity against Hep B, and will be carriers. Overall, about 1.5% of people infected will develop cirrhosis and end stage liver failure, and 0.5% may even develop liver cancer.
Most people will actually get rid of the virus with their immune response, but a minority won't. This is in stark contrst to some other viruses like herpes and HIV...they will persist for life.
If you receive hep B vaccine, you won't catch it in the first place. If you have unfortunately contracted the virus, you need to get a series of blood test to make sure you have mounted an effective antibody resposne.

don't bother with natural remedies. regular western medicine will do very well with little side effects.
there is the hepatitis immune globulin to jump start ur body in fighting the virus. after u get that, then it's just a matter of letting ur body to kill the virus and recover. no natural remedy will help u significantly.
i wouldn't take any natural remedies, because they r not controlled by the fda (food & drug administration), so those companies have not proven to anyone that their stuff works, that they're made right, nor made consistently the same.
proven problems with these remedies r: too much pesticides used (which would aggravate ur liver) in growing the herb, they used the wrong part of the plant (so no active ingredients r in the medicine), amount of medicine varies from lot # to lot # and even within the same lot #.
also keep in mind, there r also reports of people who took so many natural remedies, thinking that natural means safe, that they ended up with liver failure!
best thing for u to do is take the immune globulin, rest, avoid alcohol/drugs, limit the total amount of tylenol to <2000 mg/24 hours (better if can avoid taking it), eat a balanced diet, stay well-hydrated, get enough sleep.
hep b is tough, but can be overcome...just take good care of urself.

btw- pam anderson has hep C...which is far worse & many people do die from it.
don't get the vaccine...u have the virus, so u need the immune globulin.

the only possible cure is that of antiviral chemotherapy.

as for herbals the only thing that will help, NOT CURE is milk thistle as it has some antiinflamatory properties and will lesson the load on the liver.

flushes, cleanses ect, will do nothing and tend to make matters worse.

i would make an appointment to see your doctor and ask about treatment...you might have a chance to get rid of it with the antiviral medications.

good luck!

*to the poster about pamela anderson....she does not have hepatitis b she has hepatitis c and is in denial that she is ill. she also blames tommy for her infection, when most likely she had hcv long before they ever met. hcv's transmission is low via sexual intercourse because it is trasmitted by blood only.

How can I protect myself against hepatitis B?

Get vaccinated

There is a vaccine that protects you from getting hepatitis B. You get it in three different shots. Most people who get these shots develop antibodies. Antibodies are proteins that your body makes to fight certain diseases. These antibodies will protect you against hepatitis B. If you already got vaccinated or if you are not sure, talk with your doctor (or health care provider). Your health care provider can check to see if you have antibodies against hepatitis B.

Avoid high-risk behaviors
High-risk behaviors are things that some people do that make them more likely to get a disease. You can get hepatitis B through contact with (or by touching) the blood of a person who has the disease. You can also get hepatitis B through contact with other body fluids like semen and vaginal fluids. For example, you can get hepatitis B by having sex or sharing needles with a person who has the disease.

Will I know it if I have hepatitis B?

Not necessarily. You may have hepatitis B and not have any symptoms. You can still spread the virus to others even if you don't have symptoms. Some people who do have symptoms might have the following:

Yellowing skin or eyes (or jaundice)

Not feeling hungry

Feeling tired

Muscle, joint, or stomach pain

Stomach upset, diarrhea, or vomiting

Can I get tested for hepatitis B at VA?

Yes. You can be tested for hepatitis B at your VA medical center. This test is done by taking a sample of your blood.

What tests will I have to do?

Your doctor may ask you to do the following tests:

Hepatitis B surface antibody(Anti-HBs)
If this test is positive, it means that
you have antibodies against hepatitis B and are safe from getting the disease

you were either vaccinated against hepatitis B or exposed to it at some point in your lifetime

Hepatitis B core antibody (Anti-HBc)
If the test is positive, it means that
you have been exposed to hepatitis B and have developed an antibody to only part of the virus

they will do more tests to find out if you have the disease

Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)
If this test is positive, it means that
you do have hepatitis B

you can spread the virus to others

Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)
If this test is positive, it means that
you have high levels of virus in your blood

you may be very contagious to others

Is hepatitis B serious?

Yes. Although many people who are exposed to hepatitis B will be able to get rid of the virus, some people can develop chronic (or lifelong) hepatitis B. This may lead to liver damage, liver cancer, and death.

Is there a cure for chronic hepatitis B?

No, there is no reliable cure for chronic hepatitis B, but there are treatments available.

If you've been infected with hepatitis B, take steps to protect others from the virus. For instance:

Take precautions to make sex safer. The only way to protect your sexual partner or partners from your hepatitis B infection is to avoid sexual contact.

Don't share needles or syringes. If you use IV drugs, never share your needles and syringes with anyone.
Don't donate blood or organs.
