sam-e is an amino acid. A knowledgable doctor can do a blood test to determine if you have a deficiency that sam-e would correct. I thought about taking it myself, but my doctor did a test and found I didn't need it. What she did find, though, was that I had a deficiency in Vitamin B12 (a deficiency in B12 also causes depression) so I'm taking that along with some other vitamins that she found I was deficient in. A lot of doctors don't know about alternative treatments (many just prescribe anti-depressants, which have many dangerous side effects). You can find a more knowledgable doctor here: http://www.alternativementalhealth.com

It is interesting that Sam-e (S-adenosylmethionine) is considered a prescription drug in Europe. Manufacturers suggest a dose of 200mg to 1000mg. It purports to be useful in depression and arthritis.
If you are bipolar, avoid it, as it could cause a manic episode. Furthermore, it is associated with an increased risk of heart disease. Avoid SAM-e if you have Parkinson's Disease.
All drugs carry risks, however, sometimes the relief they bring make some risks worthwhile. I do stress, however, that if you are on any prescription medicines, especially prescriptions for depression, that you tell your doctor that you are considering SAM-e. SAM-e can affect some drugs.

Have you seen how much Sam-E costs?!
Anyway, I tried it for two months. It didn't work.
I've since started taking Rx antidepressants, and they work SO much better, there isn't even a comparison.
If you think you're depressed, please realize that the reasons for not taking the official Rx meds -- like stomach problems -- that you tell yourself are a SYMPTOM of depression! Depressed people want to try ANYTHING but the official stuff, because their efforts are only half-a**. (That's not an insult, by the way. It's just a symptom.) You can go into a depression forum and lose count of the people trying "better" home/natural remedies.
Anytime you think "No..." or "but..." about something (like meds), that's your depression talking. Lying to you. Talk yourself into saying "yes" so you can get better and see how lame the excuses were.
Experience talking, here.

it would be good for you to see a doctor and therapist to see what's bringing that on. it could be something other than depression. a lot of people have achieved positive results with sam-e for mild clinical depression, and while it wouldn't _hurt_ to try it out, you should really find out what's going on with you for sure. don't delay going to see a doctor. you deserve to feel better!
