Why are Muslims men allowed to have 4 wives?

I am not interested in stupid answers, neither am I interested in hearing anyone preach about their own religion. I really want to understand why are Muslim men allowed to haev four wives? I heard from a Muslim friend that this is because Mohamad took in a few women under his shelter away from the enimies. And wasn't really 'marrying' them. I just want to understand this.

But in my country, this is not 'approved' of anymore in this modern age.

someone says this is a sensitive question? i wonder why.i asked because i want to understand. and i got some crap answers because there always losers everywhere we go. and he says please respect others. i wonder when did i disrespect others? or was i suupose to bow and say thnk you to those losers who gave crap answers?

if every woman got married to one man, there would still be more than thirty million females in U.S.A, four million females in Great Britain, 5 million females in Germany and nine million females in Russia who would not be able to find a husband. Thus the only two options before a woman who cannot find a husband is to marry a married man or to become public property. These are the only two options.Infact the Qur’an is the only religious scripture in the world that says, "marry only one if you cannot be fair to all." have you ever heard that.
Qur'an 4:3 explain the Muslim position on polygamy. This verse explains that a muslim man can take more than one wife only if he is able to be fair to all of them. If he cannot treat them equally, he should have a relationship only with one wife.

Let me approach to your query in a scientific way.

Let’s just take the USA as a country and analyze it. In the USA, women outnumber men by 7.8 million. New York alone has one million more females as compared to the number of males, and of the male population of New York one-third are gay’s i.e. sodomites. The U.S.A as a whole has more than twenty-five million gays. This means that these people do not wish to marry women. Great Britain has four million more females as compared to males. Germany has five million more females as compared to males. Russia has nine million more females than males. God alone knows how many million more females there are in the whole world as compared to males. Now tell me based on these facts if more than one marriage is restricted then of course the extra marital affairs and divorces will be on the rise and USA as a perfect example of suffering.

Prophet never ordered Muslim men to have 4 wives. It is permissible to have more than one up to four IF AND ONLY IF HE TREATS THEM ALL EQUALLY. Why has this been given as an option? You tell me if that decision was right or wrong.

Well, it is said in the Koran that men are allowed to have up to four wives. However, the man must love them all equally. This is almost impossible, so the Koran is basically saying "no" to bigamy. However, most people just look at the fact that you CAN marry 4 wives with no hitch. Muhammad did have multiple wives, and he did seem to favor two wives more, but he kept all of them happy. Oh, right, Somebody reminded me of something. Men would usually marry widows not out of love but to help support them.

i am a muslim a girl,and sometimes i thought that this rule is not justice,but now i'm say that it has so many reasons.
men and omen in islam can have sex only when they are married by the rule quran has said.so think that a man lives with a woman that loves her but he can;t have sex with her so he need another woman,but he should marry .
a man can have 4 wife legally only if he treat them equally and love them all the same.if a man has married and without the permision of the first wife gets another wife this marriage is not legall and right.
the man who has more than 1 wife should make life for all of his wifes same,if he buys something for one of them quran has said that he should buy the same thing for others too.so in everthing and every task in life he should make a balance between them.
now if he can't do this he hasn't permision to have another wife.
i think nowadays it's impossible for some men to have just 1!!

The Qur'an is the only religious scripture that recommends men to marry only one wife (Chapter 4, Verse 3) and the only religion that put an UPPER limit of 4 wives, compared to the hundreds of wives and concubines that men kept throughout history until Islam stopped the practice. Christians, Jews and Hindus continued to have multiple wives until Islamic teachings spread to their domains and they began implementing these rules for their own people. But it didn't happen until the 19th century for the rest of the world and they extended the restriction to only one wife.

Most Muslim men have only one wife. I personally would marry only one wife too. Its so damn difficult to get a good girl to marry these days, forget about four!!! do you know how many shoes they'd be around the house!!!

Whatever "demon_card99" has said is right, so I won't repeat them, also I should say most of our prophet wives were widows, or ladies who didn't have anyone, so our prophet marry them to give them a shelter for life. He had the duty to behave them equally and he did. JasonLee is also right.

Its better to have ONE because NO MAN can follow the prophet Mohammad's (PBUH) foot steps and treat them all equally. There is one soul mate for all of us... a man is only allowed to marry another wife under certain circumstances.. not for sexual pleasure though (for the perverts out there).

Look... it's another man-made "religion", and as such one can write the rules any way one wants. In this case, obviously, whoever wrote the rules for the Muslim religion, decided that a Muslim man can have four, (or however many), wives if he so chooses.
It's really just as simple as that.
