Pears imply plural, as in more than 1.
So, he took one pear and left one pear.

he had one eye (not eyeS); there were two pears, of which he took one pear (not pearS) and left one pear (not pearS).

Actually they weren't pears, but apples. He swallowed them and they became apples of his eyes.
