Studying religion is one of my favorite hobbies. I like to find out what other people believe in and why they do. It's an interesting topic and it's often shrouded in a bit of mystery. I think that one reason people who don't believe in God/Gods come to the religion section is so that they can get a new perspective on an old subject. Challenge their beliefs and seek out the truth.
You said it yourself. You ask not to provoke but to understand. Alot of people in the religion section feel strongly about their beliefs and they just want to understand why others feel strongly about their faith.
I think another reason is because, sadly, there are always people on here who try to make them look bad. Some people have nothing better to do than post mean things about Atheists and I think that non believers have every right to come in here and defend their way of thinking and tell others the truth about what they think/feel about spirituality.

It's like reading an editorial column written by a Republican. Who responds to those more often?....Democrates. When you believe you are right about something, and yet so many people don't believe your right or don't understand, you feel compelled to try and help them.
Especially when the stakes are this high. Think of how many wars have been fought over religion. I believe if I could sit down individually with every christian on earth, and debate the issue with them. I could get 60-70% of them to realize the truth. There is No God.
If you are a christian, and you would like a one on one debate, my AIM name is bahtzee. Feel free to drop me a line.

I see where you are coming from.....
I guess there could be many reasons for that.
Some I think are...
1. Some people don't believe because of some circumstance they've been through, but they feel the need to find answers of truth.
2. Some non-believers just want to entice others to fail.
3. Maybe they are being pulled here by God, and this is his way of winning them back as a part of his family, because he loves them.

Me? I don't get worked up, I am here to learn.
The better to learn about the world, the better to fix it, basically.
And another way in which I help is to try to remove stigma, people sometimes ask worthwhile questions.
And the last reason is in order to get the most accurate world view I can, I like to see if anyone has good reasons why I ought to convert to their faith... however, dredging through the sludge about how evil Darwin was, and how atheists just plain hate Christians, et cetera, it gets somewhat tiring.
Finally, there are fools who think that atheists just don't want to take responsibility for what they do - I usually tell those types that it is the same as telling them it is the same as saying "Christians are immoral because they think that they can get forgiven for anything".
That is about it.
Cheers.

If you don't put your point of view then the opinion formation and descision making could be hampered. Maybe your answer could stimulate thinking which might change his / her opinion. You may not believe what I believe in but maybe my very same believe can be hurting you some way or the other.
Opinions do matter but its the right mind that thinks over it and then decides what to do.

Such so-called atheists think of themselves as 'very broad-minded, sane intellectuals' like they have all the solutions to the problems of the world. Innately, most of them believe in the existence of God but either are too 'Modern' to believe in such an 'ancient' theme, or are angry at God for some reasons (like if they had to face some misfortune in their lives) so being stubborn airheads, they conceive God as human-like (like they have the power to fight Him) and deny His existence, as a way of venting their anger directed at Him.

Because they DO believe. It's a matter of faith. They believe that God doesn't exist.
The people who respond to such threads are not agnostics (those who simply admit that they don't know whether or not God exists), they are those who firmly believe that God does not exist. They will attempt to deny (to themselves and others) that this constitutes faith, but it is an obvious fact. And like other believers (including those who believe God does exist, or those who have a strong faith in a particular political movement), they do not like their faith questioned. It upsets their prejudices.

Personally i would like to see religion die down. The religous mind is a dangerous thing. christianity has too much power in this country. power in laws, over economics, over peoples minds. Sure they allow the things that are no big deal, like porno sites, alcohol etc.
I would like to church attendance down. I would like the christian view of life destroyed That view that we as individuals should not consider ourselves equal with authority. This just believe and dont be critical mentality that christianity would like as all to follow after should die. I would like to see the church getting no special tax breaks at all. I dont want my taxes used to pay for religion.
so if answering questions here can cause some believers to stumble, im all for it.
Jesus is a myth

people allow christianity to take advantage of young minds. Thats how they got me. If christians dont like someone like me speaking about it , dont introduce small children to your rediculous doctorines. I will answer questions on christianity because I now have knowledge concerning it (thanks to you christians), I answer against religion because I dislike it and want to protect others against waisting so much time and energy into your fantasies

To invoke anger against the posters.
To attack religion and it's believers.
To convert those who are weak in their religion or non-religion
To teach against religion
To coerce others to believe in evolution
To bash those who are against the gay lifestyle
To bash those who are for prayers in our education
To bash those who have different political views
To bash those who are against abortion and stem cell research
To antagonize anyone who pose a question leaving them out
To ridicule those who believe in the bible
To protest God's existence
They are demonic tools used by Satan to try to bring confusion on this site.
Their motives are not pure nor productive.
They are only hurting themselves and those who are surrounded by them.

Well a lot of the religious questions are directed at those who don't believe. If there was a section for Atheists, I bet you anything that a lot of believers would go THERE and reply.
