Just because he has a degree does NOT mean that he will be an officer.
IF he joins ROTC, as several people have suggested, the military will pay for the first two years. After that, he will have to decide if he wants to continue into the military. If so, then he will sign a contract with the branch of service that is conducting the ROTC. He will do his last two years of college, get his degree, and then go into active military for a minimum of 6 years.
If he enlists (enlistment in the Army is 2-6 years, based on job and bonuses), he will be given the opportunity to go to college for free, have him military experience counted as college credit, and be able to become an officer after completing his degree. This can be done in several different ways, Officer Candidate School, Warrant Officer School, or Green to Gold (ROTC for 4 years). ALL branches have the GI Bill, which is a guaranteed amount of money for college, and the Army also offers a College money bonus for people who are qualified and select a job with that bonus.
I would suggest that YOU BOTH go and talk to the recruiters in your area. DO NOT sign or agree to anything until you have collected ALL the information from ALL the branches. You should look over the information, and determine who will guarantee, in writing, the most for your son. You will be able to go with him to the MEPS station, if you so desire.
Thanks for thinking of us, and for allowing your son to do what he wants. Good luck

It won't make him an officer. BUT when he has some (doesn't have to be a degree just some credits) he will go in at a higher rank which means more money and he also gets a higher sign on bonus. My husband only had part of an associate degree and went in as an E-4 and I had a friend with a degree that went in as a sgt. But if he wants to join first you just have to respect that and remember that he can go using the GI Bill and under some MOS's he'd be able to do both at the same time.

I am so tired of seeing crap on here, like 'Don't let your kid join, and get his head blown off!' That is so childish! Anyone who says that is a coward in my book! I joined the U.S. Army when I was 20 years old during the First Gulf War, no one told me not to join cause I might get my "head blown off" If your son wants to join the military, good for him! You should support his decision to do so. If he goes to college first and gets a BA, the he can join and become an officer after he attends OTC (officers training) It would be the best thing he can do with his life.
Tell your son to go for it!

Depends on your country really. In most countries you have to enter a military academy where you get a degree when you graduate along with your military commision. Some countries have direct entry schemes that allow a person to join after graduation. The third option is to join up thru vacancies in direct entry for people who have trained for the reserve forces - ROTC in US, NCC in India, Scouts in many countries.

yes! You are right. Check with the college. See if they have an ROTC program. He will want to go to a college that has an Army ROTC. There are others..Navy, AF...etc. IF he signs his commitment. ROTC will help pay for college...I know people who have done it. And yes, then he would be an officer. that is the way to go. They get paid better and treated better...for the same time in service as an enlisted!!!!!
